| Show A first I 1 given great tio nors new york aug 23 A special to the herald from says for the first time in the history of the united states military academy ft first lieutenant will be anade superintendent 0 abo academy the officer to be thus honored is first lieutenant alfred mills 0 the first cavalry one 0 tho heroes ot santiago who abow has the temper ary rank of captain as a member general youngs staff the president made this selection and as a reward for gallant conduct at the storming of san juan height lieutenant mills was general youngs caret of staff during the santiago campaign he was severely wounded during the battle at san juan having been hot in the bead and losing an eye the president had an interview with captain mills a few days ago and hearing from hia own lips the story of the work of the troops at santiago and remembering mem bering the glowing account which general young had previously given him of the conduct of this brave officer offered him the of the military academy which is considered one of the most important commands within bis gift although of low rank captain mills is nearly 45 years old and has had considerable experience in work which specially fits him for his new doties he has served as instructor at the academy and last year was in charge of the department of strategy and tactics in the fort leavenworth cavalry and infantry school he is a native of new york and was appointed from that stale to the military academy july 1 1874 i |
