states will be interested in acme of the figures which the bureau of statistics of the treasury department has compiled regarding the import and export trade of various ports of the country and comparing the years business with that 0 the preceding years the rivalry among the coast cities for the honor and profit of handling a satisfactory proportion of the foremen corn meree has been unusually sharp the past year or so the rapid growth of carrying trade along the chain of great lakes and chonce by canal or rail to the coast the sharp competition and reduced by rail from the grain nalda of the west to thy south atlantic ports and the increased rail and water facilities of transportation between the upper mississippi sis sippi valley and gulf ports together with improved harbor facilities at various points bava produced material changes in the drift of the crea bulk of the grain and provision product of the country which goes to europe while our increased commerce to asia and Oc eanica has materially and advantageously affected the business of the ports on the pacific coast these facts together with the claims that certain ports enjoy special advantages in railway rates and terminal facilities have made the interest in the comparative business of the various ports unusually great A comparison of the figures covering abo exports and imports of the various ports during the fiscal year with those of preceding years presents some interesting and suggestive facts bearing on this subject they show that the atlantic ports considered as an entire group retained when compared with the preceding year their normal proportion of the exports of the year but lose in imports the cotal increase in exportation from these ports being per cent while the total increase in exportation from tha entire country was per cent the total importations of the atlantic ports however fell per cent and while the imports into the country decreased but per cent the gulf ports did not as a whole maintain the rate ol 01 increase which the country at large made in exports their percentage of gain being but ag per cent while their loss in imports was still greater being per cent the pacific ports made the most satisfactory record of any group their gain in exports being per cent while they actually gained in imports per ent the northern border made the largest of gain in exhortations exportations the total for the year being per cent greater than that of the preceding year while per cent the gult porta increased their exeor materially especially wheat and flour though in corn there was a heavy decrease galveston Gal Teston increased her exports over those of last year per cent while of new orleana increased 11 per cent in imports galveston made a marked increase those of 1898 being 49 7 per cent greater than these of 1897 while new orleans lost materially in her import which in were per cent less than in 1897 the imports at new orleans in 1898 amounted to per cent of the total imports into the country against per cent in 1897 while the exports were per cent of the total of the country in 1898 against per cent in 1897 and 1269 per cent in 1690 estone chare 1893 and 39 per cent in 1890 while the imports ot the year although lees than those of 1897 were much creater than those of any prior year up the leading articles ot our export gubb as wheat corn flour etc it is found that the north atlantic ports have lost materially in their proportion of the export trade while their loea becomes the gain of ports further south new york which in 1893 bandied per cent of wheat exported handled ant per cent ot the wheat exported in 1898 her pre of the corn export ot 1893 was per cent and in 1898 but per cant her percentage of the flour export which in 1893 was per cent tell to per cent in 1898 while her percentage of the exeor tation of which in 1893 waa per cent fell to per cent in 1898 boa on exploited in 1898 less than alx lx per ot the wheat crop over 14 per cent in 1897 and but 55 per cent of the corn exported against over 10 per cent in 1891 this loss of grain exports by new york and boston became the bain of baltimore newport news new orleans galveston and certain of the northern border points baltimore bandied in per cent of the whole exeor lations per cent in 1897 newport news increased from less than 1 per in 1896 to over 2 per cent in 1898 new orleans increased from less than 4 per cent in 1897 to over 11 per cent in 1898 and galveston increased from 4 5 per cent in 1897 to over 7 per cent in 1898 in corn exports however new orleans and galveston lost new orleans dropping fram per cent of the total corn exports ot 1897 to per cent in 1898 while galveston dropped from 34 per per cent in 1897 to 23 percent in 1898 |
