Show HOW THE BOOKS WERE BURNED standard oil company investigation in ohio cleveland ohio dec 22 the taking ot of depositions by attorney general monnett to attempt to prove that the standard oil company had destroyed a lot of its books and papers a few daya days before the supreme court ordered the books to be presented as evidence in the investigation ot of the standard oil company was resumed today john testified that he had been lu in the employ of the standard company for over two years ney said that on saturday mornin morning 91 nov 19 he was ordered to burn a lot ot of standard oil companas comp anys books he burned them at about 8 in the furnace of the shops later in the day he said sald he was ordered to go to the k euclid avenue offices and get some boxes the boxes were taken from the fifth floor in the elevator but some one objected to them being taken out of the front door thereupon the boxes were taken back to the fifth floor mcbirney said that he remained around the office until 6 5 that afternoon and then the boxes were lowered by rope and tackle from one of the windows he was assisted by four other employed emp loyes of the cof cori tany pany the boxes were taken to the com banys warehouse they remained there until monday on monday morning he and a man named moran blom took the books out of the boxes an and burned them in ili the furnaces there were nine boxes of books and six sacks of papers some of the books were about twenty inches high and others were much smaller mcbirney said that the books that were burned on saturday morning were taken from the euclid office friday night he ile received his orders to get the boxes from george field the foreman on cross examination said that be and moran burned the books that were destroyed saturday morning moran helped open the boxes and took out the books and burned them next morning mr field gave him orders to go to the warehouse get the boxes and take them to the furnaces the regular standard oil inquiry before the special master commissioner er brinsmaid Brins mald waa wast not riot taken up today because rockefeller squire and severance who we were re wanted to testify could not be found attorney I 1 general monett desired to proceed f with the hearing and to subpoena bookkeepers and other employee emp loyes of the standard i attorney kline for the standard ob lecter and argued tor for more delay said i mr monett we have been a year and two months getting g three days testimony we have met with nothing 1 but delays and the state is ready to on NOW go mr kline stated that botho to the best of liis its knowledge secretary squire would return to C cleveland leveland january 4 severance bad apen out of the city tor for several months month s and he did not know where frank rockefeller w was as he lie further said that none of these gentlemen had left the city to prevent service being secured on them after argument at le length commissioner ordered the hinves investigation t I 1 adjourned until jan 4 at 10 a 2 in |
