| Show SHALL ROBERTS TAKE HIS SEAT it Is quite amusing to note the opinions ot the great papers of the country as to the question of un seating mr roberts the congressman elect from utah abo new york herald has interviewed a number of representatives concerning the question of mr roberts right to a seat mr dingley Is quoted aa saying that if the charges made against mr roberts should be found to be true it would not be merely an ordinary case of a lawbreaker being sent to congress it would be an affront so grave that he thought the house could not avoid taking some notice of it and it might be possible that it would lead to expulsion many other representatives take practically the same view while many others upon whom the herald reporters called were more noncommittal declaring that they wished hear the evidence before rendering a decision one man turner of kentucky remarked that he care it roberts had five hundred wives it he has three he has enough trouble without any one trying to unseat him A man that can manage three wives must be a genius and ought not to be disturbed general shattuc of ohio said my judgment is that there will be ample opportunity tor the congress to first ascertain just how many representatives were crowded into congress through bulldozing shotgun process the man who supports three wives nicely and treats them as a wife should be treated Is a million times better than the man who secures his seat as one or two appear to have done who will claim their seats in congress next term I 1 am tor commencing with those who commit the greatest offenses and by the time we get through with those mr roberts offense will appear very slight by comparison mr cooney 0 missouri said mr roberts beyond doubt was fairly elected by the people of utah to represent them in congress I 1 would not vote to unseat him if he had a thousand wives another mr pierce says he believe that mr roberts will attempt to introduce all his wives to washington society at once and so long as he does not openly practice polygamy in washington I 1 think the question of his eligibility will not be noticed officially the standard believes mr roberts will take his seat we believe he should take it it mr roberts is a criminal then there are other criminals in congress the washington post which cries aloud for roberts to be unseated had better study the utah situation before it gives its opinion on the matter in the mean time we would suggest to the editors of the washington post that they take up the case of those congressmen who month after month commit crime right in washington under the very eyes of the post editors we know that the post editors know of these crimes that are committed by congressmen and senators we know that the post can speak of those washington matters with more knowledge than it possesses on the subject concerning the utah congressman elect it is not necessary to single out the can gressman elect lect from utah if one fourth of what we were informed of in washington is true other congressmen and senators are much more fitting subjects tor the posts attacks than la mr roberts first purge your congress of greater crimes than you charge roberts with start in with the purification of congress it you wish but begin with the most ot Tenses and not with the least of them all under all the conditions under which B H roberts was elected the standard claims it is duty to stand by him and see him seated an fn congress |
