Show SENATOR CANNONS PERFIDY when frank cannon returned from the st louis convention the standard editor was president of a meeting that welcomed the senator back to utah and congratulated him for standing up for silver but when that waa done the senator had not repudiated republican protection in fact the senator eaid he could not bo a democrat bo cause he was not a tree trader and because he was a protectionist he would remain a silver republican and to emphasize the fact that the senator led the people of utah and the standard editor to believe that he would remain true to republican protection tec tion we publish republish re the following preamble which the senator prepared and signed at that time it reads as follows we the undersigner undersigned under signed republicans who repudiate the financial plank 0 our party which was adopted at the last st louis convention yet subscribing our sincere adherence to the republican idea of protection as taught by the fathers and reciprocity as promulgated by the greatest of moa ern statesmen james G blaine recognize from the recent political occurrences curren ces in our midst the utter inability of the mckenley republicans to meet the present great emergency that has arisen to the end that the people of utah may be made to feel that the republicans of this state are true to their past platforms and party declarations we hereby subscribe our names pledge our hearty operation cooperation co and lend our presence and support to a call for a grand mass meeting of silver republicans to be held at the grand opera house ogden where the true doctrine of the republican party of utah may be set forth by speakers who are in accord with the demands of the times tho silver republican party was organized at this called meeting in the opera house Is not this the same platform on which the present utah republicans stand every republican who favored silver fully believe that senator can dpn would remain true to protection and implicitly trusted him but when the dingley bill was about to pass senator cannon arose in the senate of the united states and said THE DINGLEY BILL DOES NOT GIVE protection TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IT PROTECTS ONLY THE FAVORED FEW when that statement was wired to tho utah papers the salt lake tribune did not believe what senator cannon had said of the dingley bill the standard editor however bellev ed that senator cannon was true to protection and that he told the truth about the bill we had every confidence in frank cannon being true to his promise and true to his pledges I 1 and in bis defense we published at that time the following statement in reply to the tribune using senator cannons own words we differ from the tribune however on therea eone senator cannon rivea for against the bill tim tribune Tri iune I 1 fays the reasons the senator are ble frodi a republican point we chink no the tact thai t cannoa was alie only republican who voted the bill does bot prove the tribunes statement party believes in protection for the american people the bill referred 10 does not eian protection to alif american Amei ican people it protects only the few and from a republican eland point from our way ot In senator cannon cial ihfe republican aute but in oida tr test atif promised in the bill he should have voted ves now the cannon combination Is placing the above statement before the public in an effort to show that the standard at least in a halt apologetic way justified the senators vote but they forget that when the dingley bill was published and a copy was sent to the standard editor we discovered that senator cannon had told a falsehood when he said THE DINGLEY BILL DID NOT GIVE protection TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE when the above was published we believed the senator had told the truth we wanted to remain in harmony with the senators ideas and under those conditions wrote the above referred to statement but when we read the dingley dill and senator cannons speech as made n the cd states senate in which he denounced republican protection we then saw that w and all utah were deceived and as the senator la so fond of publishing tho above statement wo will carry this editorial in the standard until election day as an accommodation to him there waa not ervn an excuse for tha senator to go back on the dingley bill as tho dingley bill gave practically tho same protection tho bill did which senator cannon said was all the good that the people could wish for tha senator defended tho mckenley bill in every village and city in this state and when the senator at first denounced the dingley bill we supposed it was entirely different from the mckenley bill but when wo found the senator was wrong and actually denounced protection and had paired himself in the united states senate as a free trader ihen wo had our eyes opened and hen for tho first time we saw brough senator cannons perfidy we could apologize for him no long cr neither could we follow him into the democratic party under the cloak of a silver republican party had senator cannon remained true to protection aa we thought he would then what we said of him would have been all right but as ho betrayed his friends and his party the als and tho senator 8 mends at t e acre excusable tor having said a kind word for him bifora th ere aware of his perfidy and tet A
