Show chagrin and envy the animus of vicious attacks defeated fakiri fakirs Fa kirs attack one or the cantors of their undoing any 1 circumstance seized upon to gratify a malicious spirit proof of their treachery their garbled statements shown to be tho essence of unfairness tho following is a sample illustration of the very unfair methods adopted by a contemporary in its futile attempts to injure a paper that is at once loyal to this city and at the same time a successful rival of the salt lake papers the signal failure of salt lakes midsummer carnival and the unprecedented ce of celebration ia a cup brimming with bitterness that will not pase fram the lips 0 the persons who printed page after of glittering promises advertising a carnival abo success of which depended on the patronage of this city A part of the program carried out was the unstinted unceasing abuse of the chairman of committee on arrangements of celebration in this they had the puny bat enthusiastic aid of a little subsidized coterie in this city every merchant in ogden will acknowledge that mr glasmann waa untiring in his efforts to make the celebration a success they must confess too that his ceaseless untiring energy resulted ip a saving of thousands of dollars to this city the untruthful snap pings and snarl ings of defeated and disgruntled carnival fakers and their local representatives comes from a clasp of men whoso enmity is really a recommendation the following is from the tribune of july ath gentleman t glasmann of THE STANDARD yesterday morning attempted to deny the truth of the story of the scrap he had with mr wattis on saturday evanine eve nine as published in sunday mornings tribune the report as published in the tribune was substantially true as vouched for by eyewitnesses eye witnesses mr wattis went to get a paper a report of mr cannons oration that had been left for him at office the paper belonging to mr and left at THE office for mr wattis by daniel hamer mr glasmann refused to let mr wattis have the paper unless he would pay to glasmann or acree to pay one third of 20 afterward glasmann changed the amount to 10 to cover the expense of taking the stenographic report of senator cannons oration mr waitis got hold of the paper glasmann abandoning the demand for money after mr avitt tie had the paper in his possession and in hs inside coat pocket glasman told mr wattis that he could not take the paper away unless he would first promise not to give it or its consents to the tribunes ogden representative this mr wattis refused to do as a matter of principle and because Glasmann bad no right to ask it then the altercation occurred glasmann forcibly taking the paper out of coat while wattis was down mr cattia later proc ureda copy of the oration from another party mr cannon having exacted a promise from that person to give mr wattis a copy as revised mr hamer says that he took mr cannons oration b because of hia friendship for mr cannon and that he furnished THE and the herald each a coily without any charge whatever and made no bargain with glasmann Glab mann of any kind these facts as by men chese reputation jor veracity is unquestioned in the community show that GIa emann first attempted to extort money from cattia on the false pretense that there was eo to pay for taking the report of mr cannon oration and refused if give to mr cattia the properly pro that auak luak belonged to iv wauri on to which glasmann had hu claim that glasmann made an unprovoked assault on because cattia would not submit to a demace which glasmann had no right to make and rae only made out of an apparent lesire to in lure another and third that glasmann took away from cattia by force and violence a valuable paper the personal property of wattis then glasmann has the effrontery to attempt to deny these acts and tries to ascribe his own asinine characteristics to another in some places these acts would be characterized by bome names but this department will simply allow its readers to draw their own conclusion thia department desires to apologize for referring even thus briefly to one who would deliberately bo guilty geee acts the following statements made by reputable citizens require no explanation mr wattis was seen last evening by a representative of this paper he said you may state most emphatically that mr glasmann Glas mahn did not strike me there was a little misunderstanding about the copy of senator cannons speech that I 1 did not bear mr agias gias araann ill will is shown by my very complimentary reference to him in the ogden column of the herald which was written alter ray meeting with him in STANDARD office I 1 have not published or authorized the publication of anything unfriendly to mr neither have I 1 made any statement for publication unfriendly to him the readers attention ie drawn to the aden column ot the herald under date f july ath wherein mr wattis pays a digh tribute to the energy and efforts of ir glasmann in connection with the of the celebration it mr cattia had been maltreated by mr glasmann it is not att all probable hat that gentleman would have been singled out for eulogy this of itself should be an ample refutation of the stories started by the tribunes paid retainers ta and right here io is not out of place to eay eliat mr wattis always comported rom ported himself like a gentleman and has conducted his department in a manner compatible with decent journalism and creditable to the paper he ably represents I 1 was instructed bv mr glasmann to go and see mr daniel hamer and get him to take down senator cannons speech mr hamer told me that be understood mr glasmann biad engaged mr barstow for that purpose but be finally agreed to take the speech for THE and I 1 so reported to mr glas nann J N at the request of Mr Glasmann I 1 called upon mr hamer and asked him what tho charges were for making short ham report of senator cannons speech mr hamer informed me that he had been requested to do this work by mr glasman aad the price would be considered later on I 1 was also present at TUB STANDARD office when mr iiames delivered the tape written speech to mr glasmann the latter said to mr hamer do you do this work complimentary mr hamer replied 1 I dont eee why I 1 should I 1 am under no obligation to tim mr glasmann then said what are the charges for the whole work 1 will got the other papers to pro rata tho charge with me hamer said that is none of my business you can charge them what you please mr glasmann then said I 1 will inform abo other papers that the price is 10 and I 1 will get them each to pay one third mr hamer said that was all right I 1 was also present when mr wattis called at THE STANDARD office for the mr glasmann Glab mann demanded of him or an order from daniel hamer for a copy of the speech mr wattis agreed to thise just as mr glasmann delivered wattis a copy he eaid but wattis you must not give a copy of the speech to any other paper because they do not pay toward jakine the speech cattia put the speech in his pocket and started toward the door mr glaesmann Gla emann stopped him and said you must first promise not to deliver the speech to any other paper wattis raised his hand glaesmann Gla emann took this as a threat and instantly wattie lay on the floor how it was done I 1 do not know subsequently I 1 revised a copy of the speech at mr request and delivered it to thomas browning H M daniel hamer being interviewed by a STANDARD reporter stated that the matter as above stated was substantially correct that while ho was requested to take the speech by the STANDA RD and that as ho waa under no obligation to the STANDARD lie expected to charge for the speech but later on he decided to report the speech complimentary to mr cannon and the fourth of july committee mr hamer furcho r stated that he eaid to mr glasmann that he could charge the other papers what ho pleased as it was none of his business what wa done with the speech after ho had done his duty but later on he decided to let mr wattis have copy free of charge and in accor danco therewith the STANDARD delivered through mr browning a copy to mr I 1 was present ac the time of the interview between mr glasmann and mr wattis and the matter occurred substantially ly as stated by mr durbrow further however mr wattis explained that he did not intend to strike mr GI aamann and left the office to sea mr hamer about the se curine of the speech mr wattis to me today that he looked upon the matter as a complete misunderstanding 0 S PL LVER commissioner Commisa ioner W wade was been at lunch yesterday at th weber club and eald 1 I was in STANDARD office when the interview between wattis and Gl aKune took place and as near I 1 can remember the statement as mado by mr durbrow is absolutely correct there waa talk of 20 that I 1 rebern bar mr glasmann did eay that he expected the herald to pay one third of the net cost I 1 do not see how it was possible to make much fuss about so little I 1 was requested by mr glasmann to take a copy of senator cannons speech to that gentleman for revision mr cannon requested to have a copy revised for the herald as ho did not wish to fco bothered by any more lepor ers on that day I 1 reported to mr glaesmann Gla emann what mn cannon requited mr glasmann then asked mr durbrow and myself to revise the after which t took alio copy as revised to mr wattis T now it would seem that tho foregoing statements many of them made by persons whose san dingis as good to eay the least as mr Glas manne envious traducers traduce rs should be a refutation sufficient to satisfy any fair minded agader their statements also the breedi ness with which they seize upon a pro to misrepresent any person chos efforts in behalf of the up building ol 01 this city caused them and chagrin boston july 7 the republican committee today decided to bold the state paon october ast
