Chic aeo july 7 the fifine between balver anti gold in the democratic ne dional convention wag fought in the for temporary control of the control of the convention today and silver won it was a battle royal but the dilver element was too terribly in earnest to be cajoled by promises or intimidated by threats and the result left silver in complete control senater hill was earned by chairman harrity a temporary chairman and senator daniel of virginia was nominated by mr clayton of alabama mcdermott of kew jersey waller of connecticut john K fellows of new hampshire and st claire of west virginia pleaded in impassioned speeches epee ches for hill while thomas of colorado duncan of texas ladd of illinois and clayton of alabama demanded the silver nominee the fight lasted three hours and when the vote was taken silver won by votes the tone of fue gold speakers was threatening and violent the silver orators took the defensive and claimed it wag tho right of the majority to name the oll cere seated senator daniel in the chair over sen ator hill the nominee of the national committee and broke two records the beual practice which has hitherto prevailed in democratic conventions though it has been sometimes ignored in publican Ile conventions and they held the longest first days session ot great national convention recent memory the aute of cast was one less than the total vote by reason of the fact that senator hill did not vote but this loss in a cal illation of strength was offeit by his opponent senator daniel chivalrously voting against his party and bime elf the result today showed the silver men to be 48 votus short of a two thirds majority tal ing it as a tent vote but in many ecta it was not so there were eight votes of south dakota cast for hill which on a square issue of free coinage will go for silver three votes in west virginia thrown against the silver candidate today will be counted for the silver platform the territories which on the preliminary roll were riven six seats but only two votee each will probably awarded sir votes in the permanent except alaska and the district of columbia which will remain at their present 1 alaska admitted for the first time to a democratic national convention sent six gold delegates to a dilver body and it is said will be punished puni thed for its freshness fresh nesa this will give the territories 32 votes instead of 12 ae cast today and all but ot these votes alaska 2 and district of columbia 1 are counted for dilver the nebraska 16 votes will un be turned over to the silver men by the
