Show HONOR TO THE AGES old folks day was a grand success tho freedom of tho city was ex tended to tho old people thousands visit the city lester park presented a brilliant spectacle the battalion well represented yesterday the city of ogden did honor to the grey hairs of tho brave and faithful pioneers despite the dark hovering clouds that hung over the mountain tops and partially obscured the eun the sturdy pioneers began to arrive at an early hour upon every highway leading into the junction city there was a string of carriages and wagons loaded to their greatest capacity with the old people but the number that came in by private conveyances was not a marker to the vast throng that poured into the city through the channels of the various railway lines long before the arrival of the excursion trains the union depot was surrounded by conveyances of every description which were kindly loaned by the livery stables and the hospitable people of ogden for the use of the honored aged it required two large trains from the south to bring in the old people and their friends the first train rolled into the depot at consisting of thair teen coaches loaded down with ex the other section arrived about a half hour later and it had twelve coaches in which it was a difficult proposition to find standing rom let alone a seat large delegations were gathered up from all stations between salt lake and this city the trains from the north on the union pacific had many extra coaches which were crowded to their utmost capacity the number of visitors tora who had signified their intention of attending the celebration of old folks day from salt lake city alone was estimated being over 2600 while those from the various other points throughout the country will easily place the total visitors at upon the arrival of the trains the visitors were met by carriages and hands and escorted to lester park where they were extended a warm and hearty welcome by the reception committee much credit should be given to thet business men who unfurled nags and streamers from their various places of business in honor of be event 9 lester park presented a brilliant spectacle with its lavish and tasteful decorations garlands and festoons of bunting were to be seen on every tent stand and pavilion in the big square the five wards of the city and ech settlement in the county had a large enclosure set apart for the entertainment tain ment of their greets in this space tables were arranged and at noon timy the scene was an animated one there appeared to be an over abundance of edibles and each and every old settler present was bountifully supplied with a lavish assortment of good things the delegation was a largo one the headquarters tent of the eur hue mormon battalion was ally surrounded by an interest ine group of war and weather marked veterans mr 0 iian one 61 the first to estil the roll ol 01 I 1 enlistment presided over this depaep ment ol 01 thy celebration A register was kept qt all visitors rs who called during the day who were at one time members of the battalion the speakers stand adjoining the pavilion was a bower of beauty it was from there that the exercises 0 the afternoon took place seats for the accommodation of a large number were arranged upon the platform they were occupied by members 0 the battalion and also the older members of the old folks society the afternoon exercises began promptly at the program was quite a lengthy one the ogden city arnes band the north braes band and the citizens band enlivened the occasion by beveral selections wm naylor offered prayer tha old folks choir gave a well rendered election which was followed by an ad docsa by prest W george goddard was called upon and delivered a ringing speech of a congratulatory nature W V cook and savage also made brief remarks the mandolin club received generous applause during the afternoon president wilbord Wil tord woodruff gave the old people a cousine talk lie extended a libarty welcome and beat wishes for the future of the old folks president woodruff warmly congratulated the pioneers on longevity of their lives of usefulness joseph F smith of the first presidency followed and offered prayers for A II 11 cannon who is now lying at deaths door at his homo in salt lake rev C F richardson bespoke a ringing welcome on behalf of the evangelical ch battalion the remainder of the afternoon wat given over to hand shaking and reminiscences the oldest person present was mrs mary W sprague of salt lake who has seen ca birthdays she was presented with a handsome badge by mrs ransford smith other prominent old people were mr Z W derrick aged 83 lars sarah best 89 mrs bryan 81 maria hilton 83 all of salt lake mrs esther raper the widow of cap james brown of the battalion aged 82 karen fredrickson 81 mary 81 harriet baker 80 sarah adamson 82 of ogden simpson aged 80 S P neilson 80 ann whitehead Whit ohead 81 of hooper ann 80 of marriott L A chamberlain 0 willard city aged 80 bishop bunker of santa clara eton gen R T burton 0 W penrose nela emey and many others from all parts of the state the headquarters of the battalion was the centre of attraction the old muskets fabres sabres and other equipments were on exhibition and the two ladies mrs hattie nye and mrs R J taylor who courteously provided tor the wants of the veterans and their visitors had the survivors photographed in battalion costume these ladies took special pride in attending to all the wants of of their aged charges and their style of entertainment was the
