recede and the old guard one by one la called home your presence revives many patriotic memories it recalls many stirring and glorious events how vividly they rise before us and what an inspiration for the right they alf tays are to have been a faithful soldier of the union inno less a source of foy in your advancing years and infirmities than a legacy for family and friends it blesses him who gives and cn riches him who receives it is a record of patriotism and bervice in the severest trials of our history applause we all know something of what war meant and what it cost what sacrifice it exacted and for what a holy cause the sacrifice wag freely given treasure illimitable suffering indescribable and death beyond previous record or comparison by far the career number of our old comrades of the grand army are sleeping in their silent intents beyond the river but although death has decimated our ranks it is a consoling reflection that more than a million of our comrades still survive it is gratifying thought that those who served country best in war haye always been among conr best and truest citizens in peace it ia in the living present however unties and responsibilities bili ties that every soldier is now always most deeply interested applause each new engagement of the war brought its new trials and perils and they were bravely overcome the devotion to discipline and duty distinguished them then has kept the soldiers true and steady ever since applause they have not faltered and will not falter now there has been no time since they laid down their arms when we had greater nead for patriotic mitsn than now and the response res to the crisis of the power will come from al sections of our common country great ap we have reached a point in our history when all men who love their country unite to defeat by their ballots the forces which now assault the coun honor the which is upon us involving national good faith and honor will enlist their united and evening to call upon major mckinley mr bianna did not come owing to the sudden death of his brother in law the bembera of the committee who are here dined with major mckinley and then discussed with him the plans adopted by the committee at cleveland the deliberations at cleveland were largely adverted to iu considering projects a for immediate work there will be frequent meetings of the committee during the campaign the headquarter a in now york will be occupied a good desal of the time by sir II obart mr manley and mr quay it is understood mr quay will devote a good deal of the time to tho clouth a section of the country with which he ia exceedingly familiar payne acland dawes and clay ton will be much in evidence at the chicago headquarters and will have charge of very important work there it is proposed to have a lively speaking campaign but the date for the formal opening has not yet been decided upon nor has the place been chosen the selection of the time and place for the llast great rally will bo determined somewhat by the developments of the next three or four weeks the work of preparing and publishing the documents and most of the printed matter intended for distribution will be entrusted to the congressional committee in washington A great deal of this work is already under way and the committee evidently means to act with uncommon vigor in pushing its campaign of education headquarters both in new york and chicago will be opened within two weeks and the campaign will be fairly under way by the 1st of august unless some un forseen obstacle occurs |
