Show THE FIGHT WILL BE CONTINUED antil the financial is fought fairly and squarely chairman jones of the democratic national committee favors a tax of 1 per barrel on beer A vast majority of the people desire bimetallism conservative serva tive silver men are afraid of disaster washington nov 23 senator james K jones chairman 0 the national democratic committee reached washington thia afternoon and will remain here until Conf fiess adjourns A of the united associated socia ted presses saw him at his home shortly after hie arrival to whom the senator talked frankly and entertainingly upon several matters of current interest he is looking remarkably well he had just come from his hunting trip in southern missouri in company with sir bryan and governor stone of missouri the weather was too dry said the senator to bag much game the leaves were eo dry that it was impossible owing to the noise of the rustle to get within a quarter of a mile of a deer I have no idea said senator jones a question in regard to the probable legislation of the approaching session of congress that anything will be done aside from passing the usual appropriation bills As to the dingley abill what is there in the present condition to make it any more acceptable or than it was last session discussing plans for raising ie venue senator jones advanced several interesting propositions baay of the manufacturers rs he said who supported mc kinky will dou be surprised at the character of the bill that will be presented to the country the condi lions that existed when the mckinley bill 0 1890 was passed were very different from those that will confront congress when it comes to deal with the question then there was a surplus to be dissipated now there ia formidable deficiency to be considered that will make necessary a radically different sort of measure for myself said the senator 1 I should support a bill to increase the tax on beer by 1 a barrel in the first place alin alcohol in beer does bot pay an equal tax with that in whisky and fn an the second place it is a tax that can be easily borne I 1 do not think that should be taxed to any greater amount than is now levied it is the one thing that tle poor man almost 11 universally uses and be should be pared ian additional impost the same thing ais arm of coffee and in a less degree of tea and for that reason I 1 do not favor taxes on them the beer tax should be an independent proposition it will add to the revenues and if it be put in a bill by itself the money would come in at once aa to the income tax I 1 lave not examined the decision of ane supreme court with a view of determining whether or not a measure could be which would produce revenue from that coerce without waiting for an amendment to the constitution A per capita might be levied eaid the senator but I 1 am opposed to taxing poverty I 1 think the property and wealth ol 01 the country should bear the cost of government of course the poor man just as much and the same benefits from our institutions a the rich onan but they should be given to him as public are given to him what will be the policy of the dem will it continue the V fight as the republican committee have ae having decided to do uy maintaining headquarters in thein gerim between campaigns campa igna and educating athe people by the issue of literature that has not yet been officially dc senator jones answered and it will not be until utter a consultation the date which baa not been settled it will provably not be until after congress Con grees meets but I 1 think you can say be continued that the fight will bo kept sip until the issue has been fought out when will that be when the 1 of the united states have expressed kneir opinion directly upon the question if restoring silver to the position it occupied prior to 1873 the platform of the republican convention was a straddle it did not declare for the single rold standard but only for its until bi meta lliam could bo secured by dional agreement I 1 have been assured the election by republicans some of wide reputation that thousands of them voted for major mckinley because they believed him to be a bimetallist and that as much would be done for dilver under his administration us could be accomplished were bryan to be elected and it would be secured too without the danger of disturbances that were feared in case of bryans election there were behind major mckinizy McKi nIcy a largo conservative element which distrusted the radical supporters eup porters of bryan afraid to trust them with the administration of affairs bat the republicans are not united on this question and they will have to settle the matter for themselves between now and 1900 I 1 am firmly convinced added the senator with preat seriousness that a vast majority of people in this country desire bimetallism and if the republicans place themselves squarely equa rely ia line for the standard and the use of silver sub coinage coi nuge there can be no doubt ot the result of the contest we failed to elect mr bryan this year because the republicans had the bulk ot the artisan ate and we to enough of the farmer vote to offset it ant they are coming our way and if mr hanna is proceeding edine upon the theory that the farmer vote i lost to the republicans public ans there can be no doubt of the issue MAY GET democrats claim if ahe ballots are counted As cast they win louisville nov 23 chairman sommers of the silver democratic campaign committee tonight claims that if the state canvassing board counts the ballots as caste bryan will pet twelve out of the thirteen electors of kentucky he says that in many precincts ballots were stamped opposite the name of the first electors only and according to the election law of kentucky these ballots should only be counted for those electors and not for other twelve further will be taken to push the contest before the canvassing board an address is also expected to be issued urging all silver democrats to keep UD the organization and show no quarter to gold standard democrats |
