taylor and about fitly fifty others mr shurtliff elaborated upon the tha mammoth proportions proportion ti of the pioneer electric power enterprise and stated i that the benefits would be eo so many and slid eo so apparent that the email small amount il necessary for the construction of 0 the new road would not be felt in the least by bv the geo Q cannon followed with a statement that the company was not nt king the county to contribute anything any thine to the company the company had asked no bonus or bounty it bad had started a gigantic enterprise and expended already and now all they alced the county to dobas da was to advance the money that the company donld pay in taxes in the next few years and with it build the new road he ile spoke ol 01 alie envy which salt lake felt for ogden because the power plant wae was located in this city and said aid that certain wealthy gentlemen of the capital city were eager that the power should be transmitted to salt like he ile closed by intimating that it weber county showed a hostile feeling towards the power company the company would be compelled to protect itself by transmitting the power to a city that was friendly joseph bidwell and W G cragun spoke against granting the petition they urged the bankrupt condition of the county treasury and eald aid that the people were already overburdened with taxes another reason wae was that the company vaa as fellable well wel able lable to build the road and the county was wae not and it was an imposition to ask the people to contribute to the power company mr bidwell remarked that the agai agricultural clams either paid the taxes or mado made it possible for the middle men merchants luer chante etc to pay their taxes sir G Q cannon said that wae was begging the question and added that he was surprised to find men in weber county opposed to the petition bidwell replied that he be was not opposed to the petition but did not believe in railroading the matter through without giving the people a chance to be heard on the matter lie ile then asked the court to postpone action for a week in order to get an expression from the taxpayers mr fr cannon wae was opposed to delay lie eaid said the gentlemen who wanted delay desired tile the defeat of the petition and that although their words indicated they were not opposed to it the tenor of their remarks showed that they investments to the extent of in this county and speaking tor for himself and then he lie favored the petition the peoples be eold sold for torta taxes xee unless thy this rower enterprise proved successful and no one should put a straw in the way of truc cess he ile CA calad ned attention to the fact that the company had asked no bonus it is merely asking the people change toch to the road so the company can construct the dam in a few years the company will pay much more than the cost of the road in taxes besides the enterprise when completed will increase the value of taxable property from three to five millions rhe company is laying the foundation for the manufacturing center of the west it 11 we lend a band hand we are but ar slating to make ourselves prosperous roua I 1 have no burden 0 of taxation from the farmers and place the proper shara on the tho shoulders of the diddia men the 1 being that by favoring the petition the farmers farmerr were unconsciously ameliorating their condition newton farr favored giving the people a chance to pass upon the petit lin before the commissioners should take action geo Q cannon repeated a former statement that the proposed delay
