Mr. Blaine is not the man to allow his dignity to be trifled with by anybody, and he certainly does not pro-pos- e to stand it from a man of Harri-son's calibre. The cry of "British gold" has been used bv thejrepublicanjparty in the past with such good results that Warner Miller proposes using it to boom his Nicargua Canal scheme, which is at present languishing for lack of gold of any kind. He came to Washington di-rect from an inspection of the canal which as yet consists of little more than surveyors stakes, in order to fix up things with the administration to push the scheme next winter for having this Government guarantee payment of f 100.000 000 of bonds to be issued by the company, and to drop a hint that if it was not done England would furnish the money. Secretary Tracy stroagly endorses the scheme and says that we have either got to build the canal or build and maintain a seperate navy fo-t- Pacific. Nobody doubts the desirat bility of having the canal, but it is not ar all probable that the democratic House will be willing to pledgethe credit of this country in order to raise $100,000,000, to be spent under the direction 01 a re-publican machine. When Mr. Miller and his associates came to Congress to get the charter for this company the state-ment was made over and over that all the money needed to build the canal had been pledged by private partie; now atter having spent aboat one twentieth of its estimated cost, the company is practically at a stand-stil- l for lack of lunds. The repu bl icaa - Uultn - her ere gto ing uneasy over the news they are getting of the rapid growth of the Farmer's Alliance in Ohio. They know that McKinley on a high protection platform will not be swallowed by the Alliance folks. Bayard is visiting friends in Washington He declined to express his opinion of the job lot of foreign com-plications that Uncle Sam now lias on hand. Senator Morgan thinks that Mr Blaine in his last letter to Lord Salstbury on the Behring sea arbitiation has at last got into just the right position. Considerable comment has been caus ed by the fact that Secretary Foster has granted an agent of the sugar trust per-mission to visit all custom houses where imported sugar is recieved lor the pur pose of looking alter the interests of the trust in seeing that the assesment ol du ties is uniform, The Secretary claims that the interests of the Government and the sugar people are identical.but others do not see it in that light. WASHINGTON LETTER. Troat in Regular Correspondent I Washington May it. 189 r. T Mr Harrison will return this week if I no accident happens to the royal special i upon which his very much enlaiged (in ' the head) majesty is travelling, to any thing else but a united official family. Secretaries Blaine and Foster have been unable to agree upon Behring sea mat-ters and Mr Blaine has also been at log-gerheads with both Attorntv General Miller and Secretary Tracy on the au-thority of this Government to seize up-on the open sea the ship (tata, which was recently seized at San Diego, California and weat oft with U S Marshal on board but allowed him to go ashore after get-in- g outside the harbor, and which is sup posed to belong to the Chillian insurg-ejlt- a Mr Blaine contending that we have no right to interfere with the vesiel un less she is inside the three mile limit, and Messrs Tracy and Miller that we have a right to seire her wherever found. Mr Blai te has not added much to his I attachement for Mr. Harrison since that gentleman has been away for several ' reasons. He has used language, so I ,am iniormed by one of Mr.Blaines friend fit telegraphing to Mr Blaine that meant precisely what the young Emperor ot Germany ao undiplomatically expressed recently by saying' "I alone am master in this country,' and as he has never I dared to take such a position in his per- - I onal contact ovilh the Secretary ol A State it very naturally otiended him thai j lie should du so by wire. Then, as it to News Items. Hartford, May 8 Chas.J. Dixon, ar rested in New York yesterday for threa-enin- g to kill Gould, belongs heit. His relatives will have have him pat in a asylum. A terrible affair occured at Southport a watering place en the Irish sea near Preston, Mr. Sawyer, a landlord was attacked by an Italian named Cummino. The Italian used a knife with terrible eflect. Sawyer defended himself as best he could with a chair, which was soon smashed, and he was succumbing under the strokes of his assailant, when his wife and daughter rushed upon the scene and tried to rescue him, Cum-mino drew a revolver and fired upon all three following up his shots with a knife, and then fled. The wife and daughter and Sawyer cannot recover. London, May 11. -- Sinoe the Greek at-tack on the Jewish quarter of Corfu, the Jewish residents of the town have not dared to open their shops or let them-selves be seen in the streets. They creep out of their houses at daybreak to buy victuals, for which they have to pay three times their value. All the syn-agogues are closed. A recent Jewish funeral required an escost of troops.' The, anti Semitic movement is increas-ing in danger. Almost daily attempts are raede to set fire to the Jewish quarter by means of rags soaked in oil. New Orleans, May 13, In an interview with a reporter to day, and the Italian consul Corte.said, reletting to the remark of the mayor and grand Jury: "Let me tell you that I hava saved Mayor Shake-spear- 's life and I have done the ame service to Pakerson and Wicklifla and other leaders. The day after the killing there was a determined, absolute.alraost uncontrollable determination - among certain of my countrymen to kill the mayor and all those who had a hand in the butchery but I restrained their hands I controled the furious men. I tojd them to beware. I said that if any harm befell these gentlemen I would immed-iately and unreservedly denounce the perpetrators of the deed. This firm stane checked them and I succeeded in holding them with the promis that I would do everything in my power to obtain Justice.redress and satisfaction in a proper and legitmate monner by diplomatic measures between the two Hangingtoo Good A Dastardly Act at Chester Utah 31 rs. F. It.Caiidland, assault-ed and robbed By a tramp. A man arrested on suspicion City Marshal Snow of Manti, ar-rested a man on the morning of the 14th. at Manti on suspicion of being guilty of the outrage committed up-on the person of Mrs. Candland, Deputy Clawson took a good look at the man Reese, (that is what he says his name is) at Ephraim and accompanied Mr. Snow to Chester to see if Mrs. Candland could be seen and if she could identify the man Reese. The lady is ve.y ner-vous but consented to see the man and did so, but immediatela exhon-rate- d Mr. Reese and said it was a much larger man with larger hands and his right hand considerably scratched. Officers and citizens art balled aad at a loss to know how this deed could be committed in open daylight and the country arose in less than 2 hours men were out on horseback all over in the vicinity and not the slightest trace can be found of the person that committed this terrible deed. An account of the outrage from Mrs. Candland to Deputy Marshal C !ima, given on the 14th. inst Iheard a very gentle kaock at the door, I thought it was a little girl that was in the habit of knocking that way that came in to gel milk, I said come in when the door open-ed and a man walked in with a mask on his face that looked like an old Ciunoisack with holes cut for his eye,. eiogthe an I - thought at first at was one of the boyi in the ., , neighborhood that wanted to play a joke and scare me I told him to take the mask off and not to scare me in that manner. The man ap-proached me and grabbed my hands and demanded money I told him I had no money, well give me the key to that trunk, it is not locked was the reply, then he violently threw me to the floor and indicated that he wanted to disgrace my person I fought hitn desperately and succeed-ed in scratching one of his hands the right particularly bleed a good deal, then he knocked me down by striking me and jumped on my .stomach aad abdomen in such a violent manner that caused me to ex pell the factitious that was within me he grabbed it and held it up before me, I exclaimed Oh! my . God see what you have done, he said some-thing in a mumbling voice that I thought sounded like I don't care G. D. what I have done, in the mean time I was rendered unconscious from the drug that he had been rubbing my face with and the terrible agony and pain caused by his treat ment I knew no more until after Mrs Burdick found me on the floor welt-rin- g in blood caused from the wounds received from that horrible man. Mrs. Candland arms and neck is very badly scratched.
