Show ON THE RIGHT SIDE the new senators from idaho shoup and mcconnell did not have to trait wait ions long for an anity to show that they were able to rise above the dictates of the party when the alternative proposition was one directly affecting the interests of their constituents if it be charged that in consenting to shelve the force bill in order to take up the silver bill they were selfish rather than patriotic it can bo be promptly re replied pi led that when two men with scarcely a days acquaintance or association with the senate have the nerve nervo to vote squarely equa rely in opposition to a course sought to be foisted upon them under a caucus resolution their patriotism must n not ot be too ali flippantly assailed they did what they believed to bo be hialit and their friends and the west generally both admire their pluck and applaud their judgment senator hoar and other fossils of that ilk to the contrary notwithstanding we have great hopes from these recent infusions of new and vigorous blood into the solemn known as Is the united states senate not that the new is better more reliable or more devoted to high aims and purposes than the old but because while it may ba more erratic it is certainly active and while impulsive it carried warmth and life among the older senators ara are men of the highest intellectuality and nod statesmanship among the newer additions are what we are wont to call pushers and hustlers these latter if not burdened with the gray experience per peri lence ence in statecraft and the garne garnered eloids of such learning as the congressional record contains at least move too rapidly to let moss grow on their backs and know no greater diplomacy than to demand what they want they are typical of their section about straightforward and lust lusty y and their influence I 1 is 8 sure to ba felt for good |
