Show FROM ST GEORGE creat great trouble in securing og substantial dams in rio virgin sr march 8 1891 spring ia is here and everything looks bright and cheerful our gardeners are all busy pruning and planting the past winter has been very mild and plea pleasant Rant with warm sunshiny Bunah iny days and cool nights no stonna storms wl the middle of february when we bad had a soaker that lasted listed a week causing the farmers and block stock men to rejoice and as a usual it finished with a flood in the klo rio virgin abeland the land along the rio virgin being sandy and the lite river bed being quicksand sand it seemed impossible to gick build a dam that could stand a against ainah t the lie torrents that often came aul and put tine fing in new dams every year at an expense of from five to fifteen dollars per acre for all land cultivated was wearing out our farmers in december 1889 a flood did so much damage that a great many ot of our farmers were discouraged and thought it was useless to strive longer with the unruly stream A few of our more ent enterprising er citizens with lion it 0 lund at their head used their influence to unite th the 1 I citizens of washington and st george for one more effort they chogo chose a eight tor for a dam about four miles above the old washington dam where tho the river cuts through a sandstone sandu ridge A spillway two li hundred u adred and fifty feet wide was cut through tho the ridge on the south of the river then a dam five hundred and fifty long one ono hundred and fifty wide at the bottom thirty feet wide on top and twenty five uvo feet high was built which h turns the river from its channel and tho the whole stream is now run ning through the spillway A new canal ia Is also bel being ng made w which litch w will ill bring fit teen hundred acres of new now land under cultivation on besides I 1 L I 1 A 11 1 1 1 11 1 I 1 0 the old field about fifteen milea miles fu further r up the river thomas judd and others have just finished a c canal anal which w brings water to what Is called the la lit birken bench where they havo have one thousand acres of first class trait fruit land oar our city fathers have commenced work on a dirch to bring water from littia little cottonwood creek to st george georg a distance of twenty miles which wit will give our town a chance chan ell to grow ow the old g griet rist mill will at FV washington ashington has bas been transformed in into to a roller mill which will be appreciated byall by all as heretofore good flour could not be secured nearer than seventy five miles tho the factory at washington shing onis is running fall blast they make a axi specialty fialty of cotton goods such as 08 ducking domestic ging gingham bam table cloth and t towels wels our distria district t schools are in good condition better the than u ever before they are divided into three grades 1 viz I t three school two preparatory an and one intermediate the stake academy is also doing a good work there is more sican sickness sic knees ess hero here at present than we have had for years and three deaths in three days h has its cast quits quite a gloom over our community |
