council was held yesterday afternoon mayor peery occupied the chair after the usual opening exercise the were read thomas myers watchman petitioned the council co uncil to make the top room in the courthouse tower a little more comfortable as cold weather ie is now approaching referred to the committee on op public buildings Bull dinga with power to act the union pacific railway company P ny presented the following pell pet 1 tion the union pacific railway corn coin respectfully i represents that i it t tany as begun excavating for the dounda lion tion of a st union depot in said city immediately west of wall street and arid extending northerly and southerly entirely across fifth street that the he t site of said building buil dine ie is correctly indicated upon the blue plat or map herewith presented that it is is the intention of your petitioner pet ioner the eaid said railway company to prosecute work in the aid said bull building ding continuously until the earne same la is completed that aid said structure cannot be erected while aid said fifth street where the same passe passes across the site if of the same 1 Is used as at present in consideration of the pre premises mites itee your petitioner respectfully prays your honorable body to clo chloee a e and vacate or authorize the closing and vacating of so much of said fifth street as conflicts with the site suggested that the matter be referred to a committee to report a resolution at the tile next meeting councilor rich urged hi his motion he was not in favor of putting any obstructions obstruct lone iu department petitioned the council to remit the poll tax of members of the fire companies according to precedent the petition was wai granted and it wa was evolved r ved that the secretaries of the companies c furnish the supervisor Super vitor with aith a list of all bona fide firemen for bis his guidance councilor driver called attention to the fact that there are several sever honorary firemen and suggested that a like favor sho should uld be extended exten deil to them it was thought however that the lists would cover this question and the matter dropped alderman narrie of the committee on claims recommended a reduction of 50 per tent on the assessment of darks clarks mill millas as per petition the committee commit iee reported adversely on the claim of sheriff belnap councilor boyle of the committee on fire department recommended that a ceal coal house be built at the fire mens men hall eUall the report was accepted and the structure will be erected under the the recommendation chief of fire department Depar truent as to the necessity for hydrants in certain part parts of town the committee suggested that seven new now hydrants be put in the cost will be about HO 40 each hydrant the report waa was accepted and the tile committee com commit mitlee lea was given power to act in regard to the hydrant hydrants mr eccle eccles called attention to the tile reservoir and asked whether the council desires the committee to take any ny eters toward towards covering it in and other otherwise improving it the committee was instructed to furnish eu esti matee this motion was seconded by councilor rich councilor boyle amended the motion that the whole amount be turned into the city treasury mr air wright W right seconded the amendment with wilh the th
