Show j body of a aaby found in the osden hirer t just a wo went to press yesterday afternoon it was reported that the dead body of an infant enclosed in a starch box had been found floating down ogden river on investigation the rumor proved only too true the discovery was made yesterday morning about 11 a m by an eleven year old son of miles H jones he was bearding cattle just above farra milldam and saw the box about eight feet from the bank he swam into the river and took it out and on taking oft tho lid an extraordinary sight was presented the bos contained the body of a new born male child in a state of nudity there was nothing else in the box except a fragment of underclothing der made of canton flannel the police and mark hall coroner were notified and an inquest was held T H ballantyne OS browning and miles bjones acted as jurors and after hearing the testimony of merlin jones the lad who found the bos and examining the body they rendered tho following verdict we the undersigner undersigned under signed upon oath do detato that wo believe that this infant child was born alive and come to its death by a blow oa the left side of tho head above the temple T II 11 BALLA C S BROWNING M H JONES jurors HALL coroner there can be no plausible excuse that this affair is an accident but tho whole of the facts indicate a terrible crime it is possible the perpetrators may successfully hide their identity but what must la their feelings to know hat they have crushed out a life which had only commenced on this earth but a short time before there was every evidence that no care had been taken of the little innocent but to all appearances it was ruthlessly murdered immediately it saw the light it had not even been washed the spark of life was quenched and the body was placed in a box ten inches long and cast upon the waters it is improbable that the box was thrown in the river in the canyon for with the present low water it would be broken up before it had proceeded very far ye hope to see the cruel participants brought to justice the deed may have been done to escape a terrible stigma and a life of ignominy but under these circumstances infanticide can have no extenuation whoever is guilty of this cruel deed time may probably show but unless it be a fiend incarnate remorse and the pangs of conscious guilt must make life miserable and the mind full efaw ful reflections |
