Show SPECIAL SESSION the city fathers meet and dispose important last evening the city council held a special meeting to consider the ordinances which had been prepared on alie meat licence gamb ling aud other questions the first matter dealt with was the meat license A few aweeka ago a petition was handed iu signed by the butchers doing business in this city praying that persona from tho country alio come to town wd sell fertsh meat be requited to take out a license for so doing consid crable discussion took place oyer the question which appeared to ba a very knotty one tho result was that an amendment with the follow ing title was made to the existing ordinance an ordinance amending article 7 of chapter XV of the revised ordinance which chapter was passed january an ordinance which has been prepared requiring pig pens to be placed at a stipulated distance from dwelling houses and the streets eo as to prevent as far as possible alie engendering and spread of epidemic was read this question like its predecessor had points sticking out in all directions but finally took the form of an amendment to the present ordinance the title being as follows fol lowB an ordinance amending section 6 of chapter of the revised ordinances and which chapter was passed january previous to alie last sitting of the butali legislature gambling was a felony consequently the city could not sili offenders but tho last legislature made gambling a miss demeanor thus placing the punishment of gamblers in the power of the municipality A new ordinance was drawn up of which the following is the title an ordinance to define the of gambling keeping a gambling house and pre scribing the punishment the two and the ordinance were read three times and passed and ordered to be printed councilor boyle of the finance committee recommended that the claim of the deseret national bank of salt lake city for bo paid lie also reported that alie io lake city at 8 per cent interest of the first national bank of ogden at 8 per cent and 2500 of D eccles till july at ten per cent the report was accepted and the recommendation adopted the old notes which had been taken up were also ordered to be filed alderman dee stated to the council that a meeting of the police commissioners was held last monday and they appointed some thirty special policemen who are scattered throughout the city it was also decided to employ an additional janitor at the city hall and from this time on there will be a janitor on duty in the day time this was thought to be necessary in consideration of the large number of prison ers confined in the city jail and the janitor could also receive any messages that might be sent or calls which are made through the telephone the marshal will also adopt a system of reports in the police service As to the time the police go oh duty and when they go off and also anything that might occur in their various beats the mayor fully endorsed indorsed indor sed these arrangements and the question was asked the special police should wear badges tho report of mr dec was accepted and the Mars lial was instructed to purchase a requisite number ol 01 badges for the special police officers councilor rich called attention to the fact that numerous corn plaines plaints are being made of fast daiv lug on the city instructions were firven tor the oidis nance in to furious dav ing to be councilor driver of tho committee on streets referred to the condition of the grado of sixth and spring streets the established grade if complied with would that property owners in tho vicinity would be to haul anything onto their premise and hc becom mended eliat if possible a new survey be made and the grade be altered A mo tiou was made that the question bo left with the committee on streets for them to investigate and report at the next meeting me quadric Qu arric boyle and dee were also appointed to work in connection with the street committee in regard io the alderman reported that tho outhouses out houses on lester park were completed and recommended that therum before agreed upon be paid to the builder the report aoa accepted the recommendation adopted and tho bill ordered to be paid the council then adjourned for one week |
