| Show t 1 ja f the telegraphic of tho declaration and protest of tho mormon people which was sent to nil parts of tho country has brought forth an amazing amount editorial comment from journals that usually exhibit more than ordinary candor and knowledge one example of this kind will suffice to illustrate the blundering nature of hundreds of editorial articles concerning utah and the protest the onitha dee concludes a long verbose savage piece of editorial drivel as follows the southern slave holders were convinced by force and force will convince the mormon people if they ara foolish enough to resist tho law it is dimply idle and absurd for them to talk about the outrace upon human rights and liberty by the creation of the utah commission and abolition of their local territorial legislature for more than ten years the people of the district of columbia under the very shadow of the dome of the capitol and its statue of liberty have been governed by a commission of three men they have been dis franchised and their rulers the commissioners ners like those of utah have been appointed from distant states and yet the residents of the district of columbia have not rebelled nor issued a bill of grievances to the american people now for the benefit of the scribe who penned the above for the bee we beg leave to state that the local territorial legislature of utah has not been abolished so far as any one in this territory js aware the abolition in this case exists only in the imagination of the editorial ignoramus who made the above statement to his readers but let us examine the other assumptions assertions and innuendoes of this quotation the writer first tries to draw a tar parallel between southern slave holders and the mormon people it would be sufficient to state that there is no such analogy between the southern slave holders and the people of utah were it not for alie fact that tho local antil Mormon prints are eternally repeating a lie to the effect that the cormons mormons Mor mons are slave the absurdity tf such a false allegation is apparent to all identa of utah who are acquainted with the facts but for the benefit of such ill informed gentlemen as writer of the bee it may be adais sable to sate that involuntary servitude is wholly unknown in this territory outside the walla of tho penitentiary now happily manumitted were held in bondage against their will th ey were made human chattels by law took a great war to crush that law and give the negro liberty in utah the people were free until congress sought to fetter them by a law which as it is now construed and administered is speedily reducing the whole territory to a state of vassalage that will be but little short of actual slavery unless relief cornea from some quarter although utah still haa the semblance of a legislature it ia by no means impossible but that he territory may even be deprived of its legislative body as the bee scribe thinks is already the case that any presumably sane citizen of a free republic should gravely attempt to justify such an act is what strikes us with wonder the bee scribbler alleges that tho district of columbia has been governed gover ced for ten years by a commission ol 01 three men while the inhabitants thereof have been dis franchised and their rulers chosen from distant states and ehe reason sit is simply idle for the people of utah to com if they are treated in a like manner well let ua examine logic if utah can be reduced to the condition of the district of colt ambia eo can all territories of the united states and should this principle be carried out the time would como when the territories would be densely populated and a considerable portion of the citizens of the union would bo without a voi coin their own government and in a worse condition than the british colonies in other words the territories would be subjected to taxation without representation and petty tyrants clothed with official authority would bo quite 09 odious officious and despotic as the worst governors go vernora and lesser dignitaries which the government of great britain was in the habit of sending over to oppress the thirteen original colonies that revolted against such unrighteous treatment and by rebellion laid the foundation of this great republic then again if congress could govera tha territories after they become fit for statehood ws the district of columbia ia governed why could not the sovereign states already established bo just aa righteously and justly reduced to the same system of government T 1 tho see evidently forgets if indeed lid knew alic cardinal principles of our republican form of government at all events ho is advocating a political dogma which jis entirely repugnant to the genius of the federal constitution and which would lead toa disruption ortho union and the establishment of an american despotism akin to that of it carried out in universal practice and further while we are giving the editor of our esteemed omaha contemporary a little lesson in the A B 0 of utah affairs it may not bo superfluous to inform him that the people of utah are too patriotic to dream of rebellion and they are only exercising an inalienable right as american citizens when they re fully truthfully and earnestly issue a bill of grievances to the american people |
