Show CITIZENS MEETING i and respect to bo paid to llie memory of a great man pursuant to announcement a number of citizens assembled in the federal court room last thursday evening the object of tha meeting was to devise some suitable means of expressing the feelings of the citizens of Ogden in reference lo 10 the loss the nation had sustained on that day through the death of gen U 8 grant hou P H emerson on the nomination of A S condon was elected chairman and theo was elected secretary the chairman in a few select remarks declared the meeting open for business major V M 0 silva read the proclamation of governor EU H murray which is as follows EXECUTIVE proclamation EXECUTIVE OFFICE SALT LAKE CITY utah 9 a m it becomes my painful duty to announce to the people of that general grant is dead through long his great life closed within the past hour and universal grief now takes the place of abandoned abandon pd hope As general of the armies of the united states ho won renown throughout the world grate fill thanks of his country twice president of the united states and afterwards placed again at the beai of the army upon its honored retired list he has yielded stubbornly yet patiently and uncomplainingly to the great conqueror and in his death a great chapter in our national history is closed now in the presence of this deep sorrow I 1 eli ll 11 murray governor of the territory of utah do becom mend that flags draped in mourning be placed on all as far as practicable on business houses and on houses of the people and that they BU remain until the burial and I 1 further suggest that a public memorial be held in this city oa the day and hour of his funeral and that liko meetings beheld throughout the territory SEAL ELI II 11 MURRAY by the governor L THOMAS secretary of utah territory mr silva then recommended that arrangements be made for memorial services to be hela in the junction city on the day of the funeral in accordance with the suggestion in the above proclamation this was made a motion which was carried unanimously on motion of dr condon it was decided to appoint a committee of five on arrangements three gen clemen were selected by the chairman the remaining two members of the committee were selected by nomination the following gentlemen were sustained as members of the committee dr condon chairman 0 W powers M H beardsley william farrell and V M C silva dr condon madeam amendment to his motion that the bo increased to nine on being put to the vote the amendment was lost this was again amended that the committee consist of seven this amendment was carried and DH pecry esq and H C were selected to complete the list mr farrell asked to be excused in favor ct general kimball and after a lively discussion on being put to the voto general kimball was elected in the place of mr farrell the meeting then adjourned subject to tho call of the committee |
