Show of the new minister tho frank karnett the baptist churche in this city was crowded last evening with members of that persuasion and of other denominations who had ass to give a welcome to th 0 new pastor the reverend frank barnett late of vermont the church was nicely decorated with evergreens ever greens and numerous bouquets of flowers sent forth their delicious sir II 11 A lindley was master of ceremonies and the exercises commenced an address of welcome by J W rennick A quartet was then rendered by misses dowdell and perry and Morle yand ware the ministers of the various denominations in the city thayer carroll and mcclain were called upon for chort addresses to which call each of them responded recitations songs solos and ducts were also contributed by misses cora stephens lida dowdell perry linnie young ada rcck and the gentlemen before referred to the president of the young ladies social circle in a neat little speech presented the church with a fine large bible ransford smith esq being called upon gave a short address of welcome to the new pastor he said the questions a minister in this country is called upon to decide are such as arc not to bo found else where we have here aaion of monogamy and the civilization of polygamy each contesting for their rights he hoped to the time when one man and one woman should live together in this country as man and wife he had been preaching this subject for the past sis years he also informed the new minister ho would be called upon to decide such questions as this Is it right to obey the laws of god when they conflict with the laws of man and vice versa and he would find people of opposite religious convictions willing to con test every point inch by inch but to a new pastor lie considered this should be encouragement and not discouragement alic reverend frank barnett replied in a few words of thanks for the kind welcome he had received and expressed himself as highly delighted with the appearance of the city and the warm reception extended to him on all hands and he trusted he would be able to fully reciprocate the kindness his labors among the inhabitants of ogden at the close of the exercises a supply of ice cream and strawberries and cake was passed around to those present and nt a late hour alie happy parly dispersed to their houses |
