Show REVOLUTION IN PORTUGAL. Portugal is in the throes of a revolution. The republican foroes have attacked the monarchy, imprisoned the king and obtain control of the city of Lisbon. Such is the information which comes from sources outside Portugal, but which are recognized as reliable. Portugal has been a country of unrest for years, and the assassination assassin-ation of the former king and the succession of a reactionary to the head of the nation ha added to the unrest and hastened the crisis which was reached yesterday. The Latin people of Europe are not equipped by temperament to be governed by a plebiscite, still, following the example of France, they are eager for that test of their fitness for self-government by popular voice. Like Spain, Portugal has had its religious disturbance, and the anti-clerical movement in those Catholic countries coun-tries has had much to do with the recurring outbreaks. 5 |
