Show SHOTS FIRED IN A 1 FIGHT AT NIGHT Colored M?n in a Quarrel Over a Girl Use Their Guns One of the ' Fighters is Shot in the Head Penitentiary Gates Opening for the Offenders. i In a three-cornered fight last night on Twenty-fourth street, between Lincoln Lin-coln and Wall avenue. L. W. St ran-thers ran-thers narrowly escaped being killed. The mn encased In the fight were all colored and the cause of the trouble trou-ble was a rivalry between Strautbern and J. C Pitts for the hand of a little colored girl. Th? other man who participated par-ticipated In the melee was Thomas Hlnes. The three men met last evening at the home of the girl and Immediately entered Into a quarrel, the girl trying try-ing to settle tbe matter by throwing a' pitcher nt the belligerents which landed land-ed on tbo head of Pitts, who Immediately Immed-iately drew a large revolver and fired, point blank at Strauthcrs. The ball struck Strauthers on top of the head, inflicting an ugly scalp wound. A number of other Phots were fired in rapid succession which attracted t the attention of the peace officer an-1 neighbors but the negroes made a hasty getaway from that vicinity, later lat-er being apprehended and taken to the city Jail. They were charged with disturbing the peace, on which charge they were arraigned before Judge Murphy thlst morning, each pleading not guilty. The city attorney asked that the case be conrlnued until tomoirow, o as to give him time to get witnesses. The court' was advised that the case was an extraordinary one, that it wa? posslhle that some of the men should I be sent to the penitentiary, and that the defendants should be placed under a heavy bond. The court ordered that they be held under a bond of j:$on each. It is Intimated by the attorney attor-ney that it 1s likely that Plrts will be charged with an assault with a deadly weapon. |
