Show GUESSES ON OQDEN'S POPULATION. Alma D. Chambers places the population of Ogden at 23,235 and lie gives these reasons for his figures: First, the census of 1900, which gave Ogden 16,230, was too low, even many prominent residents having been missed by the enumerators, indicating a loose enumeration and the ommission of many other persons. Second, Ogden gives evidence of having 10,000 more people than ten years ago, by reason of the fact that 800 new residences have been built, there are no vacant houses, and personal property tax has trebled over that of 1900. We agree with the county treasurer and our guess would be approximately the same as he has offered. There are a few who are estimating Ogden 's population to be over 30,000 and one business man has said he would not be surprised if the city returned 33,000 inhabitants, but those guesses must be somewhat wide of the mark. Each year a canvass of Ogden and neighborhood is made by the employes of R. L. Polk & Co.'s directory. direc-tory. The last canvass disclosed 14,000 individual names, which did not inolude children or women dependents. Each name in' the directory is estimated to represent 2 1-3 persons, or a total of over 32,000 for this city and its suburbs. Inasmuch as the suburbs will not be counted in Ogden 's population, several thousands must be deducted for North Ogden, Riverdale, West Weber and other country coun-try districts included in the directory. |
