Crane, Id George Ade's finest comedy, "Father and the Hoys." Of course, It is tl- I ways a pleasure to look forward to Mr. Crane's appearances, but this tlm I the pleasure is Intensified by th addition of the author of "Fables and Slang" to the combination made up of producer, actor and playwright. i Doesn't it sound good. Crane and Ade? There Is a mlle In the very thought of the promise that such a combination holda forth. I Since lis production the play has been meeting with a volume of sue- ' cess such aj las not been accorded any other legitimate comedy presented j so far this season. In Chicago It created a furore, and success has been Indelibly stamped all over it by the theatergoing public. At tho opening performance of "Father and the Hoys" there were times when the applause was tumulturvis. There was quite a din at the end of tho second act, compelling the comedian to come forward to thank his audience, but it was at tho close of the third act that the audience aud-ience rose to give ontbusiastic vent to its feelings of pleasure. Again did Mr. Crane make a speech, and with It he Introduced Mr. Ade. For two hours the audience had been lauching heartily. The author was too nervous ner-vous to say much, but this he did say: "I hope after it Is ell over that you will see something in this play that means more than the rlvollty usually connected with tho worl comedy." The theme of the comedy Is an old man's love for his boys. Ho has never ?id a holiday In his life, and all that he has done has been with tho hope of benefit lor the two lads. He has made the boya partners in hla business and is ambition of Heelng them pillars In the financial world. Ho?,- do tt.oy feel about It? They don't give It a thought One of them is an enthusiastic athlete, the other alma to be a leader in society. The chasm between father and tho boys soys seems to grow wider, there appears ap-pears to be less In common between them, and this pains the old man. If he could only bring the boy to their senses! He docs, and In the doing of It he has a vacation and Incidentally tho time of his life. Chicago Tribune |
