Show REFUSED CITIZENSHIP FOR BREAKING SUNDAY LAW Springfield. Ill, June 17. A man who keeps a saloon open on Sunday in this state Is not a fit person to be a citizen of the United States, the Illinois supreme court held yesterday. The case was that of the United States against Louis Harsky of East SL Louis, who sought to compel the government to Issue naturalization papers pa-pers to him. His petition was denied. Harsky set up in defense that all other saloonkeepers cf his city kept open on Sunday, and the mayor and police sanctioned it, therefore, he should not 4o discriminated against. Tho court said: "It is essential to the safety and the perpetuity of government that laws be enforced until repealed. A decision as to the wisdom of the Sunday Sun-day closing statute rests with tho legislature, leg-islature, not with the courL but so long as it is law, it should be enforced." |
