Show HOUSE REPORTS FAVORABLY ON BILL Washington, Feb. 1. By a vote of S to 7, the house committee on public lands today decided to report favora-ably favora-ably the resolution which grants to the city and county of San Francisco, the right to use 'then Heteh Iletchy and Lake valleys in the Yosemite National Na-tional Park for reservoir purposes. Representative Mendell of Wyoming, chairman of the committee, voted against a favorable report on the measure, meas-ure, unless amended In various ways. The others who opposed the resolution In Its present form were Representatives Representa-tives Volstead, Minnesota; Gronna. Indiana; In-diana; Parsons, New York; Hamilton, Iowa; Ferris. Oklahoma, and Craig, Alabama. Those who voted for the resolution were Representative French. Idaho; Smith, California; Mc-Gulre, Mc-Gulre, Oklahoma; Pray, Montana; Howland, Nebraska; Gaines, Tennessee; Tennes-see; Robinson, Arkansas;, and Hammond, Ham-mond, Minnesota. Representatives Mondell and Parsons Par-sons will prepare minority reports opposing op-posing the adoption of the, resolution, and the flght against the granting of the water rights of the two valley will be carried to the floor of the house. "The resolution as It stands," said Mr. Mondell, after the vote had been taken in the committee "would enact into a statute a very loosely drawn agreement between the municipal and county authorities of San Francisco, and the secretary ot the interior. It proposes to grant certain water rights to the state of California and divided the' water of tne Hetch Hetchy river, as It provides that a certain amount roust bo left for irrigation and water pupplles for certain other sections of the state. If we enact such a law, the reclamation service will be asking us to do the samo thing for irrigation purposes in other states. I don't see how any representative from a state having arid lands, could vote for the resolution." |
