Show OPSN SEASON FOR BURGLARS Some Very Lively Times 5n Criminal Circles Early This Morning. Salt Lake, April 29. One burglar caught after an exciting chase, an attempt at-tempt to burglarize the Fifth East pharmacy and the robbery' of the pay telephone box in the J. B. Hender-'ton Hender-'ton Commission company's store was the early morning police record of crime today. Tho capture of Frank Hall was effected ef-fected by Night Watchman George Houghton, assisted by two street carmen, car-men, after Hall had been detected try-iug try-iug to enter the Charlton shop, a millinery mil-linery establishment, at No. 122 south Main street. Before Hall was caught he had led the watchman a bard chase through alleys and down Main street. A bullet fired by Houghton failed to stop the fugitive, and had it not been for the carmeu. who grappled with him Hall might have escaped. In making his last round about 5 o'clock, Watchman Houghton found Hall with A screwdriver working to remove the screen ou one of the rear windows of the millinery store. When Hall saw that ho had been discovered In his work, ho broke and ran up the alley and then dodged through th small alleyway leading out to Main street, with Houghton in close pursuit. pur-suit. As Hall emerged Into the street the watchman fired a shot, the bullet missing the fleeing man and lodging In the door leading to the rooming bouse above Young's cafe. The warning shot railed to arrest Hall and he sped down Main street.. The two carmen, whose names were not learned, attracted by the shoUanJ tho running man, blocked his progress and managed to catch him and hold him' until Houghtem reached them. Hall was then taken .to the police station sta-tion and will be held to answer to a charge of attempted burglary. The only loss sustained at tho Fifth East pharmacy was the breaking of a plate glass window in the front door of the store. In tholr attempt to enter the store the burglars there smashed in tho window win-dow so as to reach the lock. The r.oiso of the crashing glass aroused the proprietor of the .slore. A. Hatch, Jr., who resides on the second floor of the rtore building and his outcry "Who's, that?" dn.ve -Hie two men away from the front of tho building. They woo persistent, however, and made two further utteinofs to gain entrance at tho tide door and throucU' a, rear wiadow. ' |
