Members of the Salt fake city commission have gone on record as protesting the Increased In-creased telephone rates as recently fixed by the public utilities commission commis-sion and have Instructed W. H Tolland, Tol-land, city attorney, to file a motion for a rehearing before the commission Mr Folland. In a letter to the commission, com-mission, made the following comments com-ments upon the new rates "Some of the adjustments are decidedly de-cidedly In favor of the public, while. , others, of course, Impose an additional addition-al burden upon the telephone usei-i 1 for the benefit of the company 'At the time the petition was filed the city attorney of Salt Lake City appeared before the utilities commission commis-sion In protest against any Increasn in rates. Tln Mountain Slates Tele-I Tele-I phone Telegraph company had al-1 al-1 ready received an increase through 'the approval of the public utilities I commission of the socalled Burleson ' rates, which were put Into effect dur-! dur-! Ing the war peiiod while this utility , was being directly controlled from Washington. These rates wt. a nn- terial Increase over the rates prevail-no, prevail-no, theretofore it was at this 1 1 m -that measured service was introduced I as s part of the Burleson schedule. The loporl of the public Utllltl B commission is that the net revenue i from operation is not sufficient to civ reasonable income on the In-vestment In-vestment of the company. Notwithstanding Notwith-standing this fact. It would seem that the present is not the time lo put Into effect any Increase in charges for public utility service since the prevailing tendency of labor and material ma-terial costs Is downward" The letter of Mr Folland to tho city commission brought forth the following comment from Oreni John Hide commercial manager of the Mountain States Telephtvie company, last night. ' As mentioned bv Mr Folland to the commission, there are many things in connection with the public utilities commission's findings which will be of material advantage to the subscribers of Salt Lake. In that It furnishes a four-party unlimited service, ser-vice, where the cheapest unlimited service heretofore furnished wa a two-party The new schedule is having hav-ing s tendency to regrade the present pres-ent users to the several classes of service they most desire without any material increase in revenue to the company it can readily be understood that the Company, which Is continually In need of new capital for extensions in order- to provide adequate service, must have a return sufficient to encourage en-courage new capital to be Invested, or else the service will of necessity suffer suf-fer " |
