Show ' j THE EAST GIVES ) UTAH A LESSON. Senator Smoot as head of the committee on finance, is perhaps per-haps the most powerful senator within the Republican party. Senator King, as the recognized orator of the Democratic side of the senate, who was selected as one of two men of his party to protect the interests of that side during the last session of tho senate, is as potential for good in Democratic councils as is Senator Smoot in the Republican conferences. No western state ever had such influence in the politics of tho nation. No state in any part of the union ever had so much of leadership lead-ership at one time. ' To depose Senator Smoot would be a mistake. The Standard-Examiner Standard-Examiner said that very thing two years ago. Now, to defent Senator Sena-tor King would be a blunder, if Utah aims to make the most of its political power and hold to its influence within the two great parties. par-ties. In the New England states the voters are guided in their choice in groat measure by the prestige attained by their representatives in congress. When they find their senators or congressmen have national distinction and commanding influence, they send them back again and again. Out west we should profit by the example, for out west we are in need of all the strength in the halls of legislation it is possible ! to obtain. The friendship of both parties is essential to the solving of our problems. It is bettor for us to have a towering Democrat than a pigmy Republican, now that the tariff issue has been disposed of for a period of years. Whatever be the complexion of the next congress, with Smoot and King in the senate, Utah will have a strong voice in the administration admin-istration of the affairs of government and Utah will be masterful in helping to shape the destiny of this country. Utah will be most fortunate with Reed Smoot and William H. ! King serving the people of the state in the United States senate. |
