After having been informed inform-ed by President Georgo Thomas that Joe Maddock could not accept the p6- :ition as athletic manager and advisory advis-ory coach, for the 19222!) - isoii the j members of the council decided to turn their eyes to the middle west fi-r la m:m to fill this position on the bill. Thomas Varley reported last evening that Coach Tommy Fitzpatrick will coach the athletic teamt of ih Utah school for next season and that a man may be obtained In time to lill the po-'sition. po-'sition. which was offered to Maddock. He expressed doubt, however, about a I man heing procured In the short time between now and the football season, which opens next September. Graduate Manager Prouse may bo Induced to slay until such a man Is secured and by retaining Prouse. Utah would also I be able to have this former athlete to coach its freshmen athleti s I The final decision on the man has i" n left up to Dean Leary, chairman Of the athletic COUncldl and Ir. II. H. Marshall, head of ih physical educa-, educa-, tlon department at the; state institution institu-tion These men will get in touch With most of the college of tho Big !Ten and decide to get a man, who has had some business as well as athletic 'experience. I VNS Dl APPOINTED j Many ot the hackers of Utah's ath-i ath-i i.i were disappointed when Informed Inform-ed that Maddock would not be able to I come, as Joe is well known to the Salt I Lake ians. and coald have worked J well in th-- department on the hill I along with Uih present athletic coach. Joe is well acquainted with most of I the athletes and the fans in Utah and would have made an Ideal mnn for the position, and it will be a hard matter for the authorities on the hill to get I the man to fill his shoes, as the new I comer will June plenty cf things lo j learn before he can take lull reins in tho u'hlotlc g;.mes for ne stato Institution, In-stitution, The powers at the state 'school will find some difficulty In getting get-ting the man that they want and Sec-retarj Sec-retarj Varley stated last evening thai It would take some time for them to ,. i the man to fill the job on the hxl! in the meantime, Utah's athletics vnll have to go along In the same manner ithat they have been for the last lu years add most of the managing will 1 tall on the athletic council and the I coaching dutie-j io Tommy Fitzpntrlck who will still have to handle varsity football, baski tball, track, nnd baseball, base-ball, if the latter sport is brought back into the school again next season. Manager Prouse has been a fog help on the hill and ho will leave the school .July 1, unless ;he council can persuade I him to stay over. The Utah teams 1 have been pulled over the financial : rocks by Prouse and he has gained inn h by his experience, as well as jgiving the council some aluahle v ork I During the last season, athletics paid for themselves, and this Is something j to talk about, as this has not been i the case in the past ei-;ht or nino j j ears. FITZPATRICK PLEASED Coach Tommy Fitzpatrick Beemed well pleased with the plan of th council last night, and said that some help would be appreciated. Prospects seem rather encouraging for next year and Fitzpatrick seems to think that Utah Will be out in the lead more than wr with some added help to run t hlngs. One of the biggest things that the present I tah athletic director has planned for next year on the campus is a University of Utah athletic club for the men who have won their letters let-ters i" my branch of athletic activity on the campus. This should be a good time for this sort of a thing as man of the man who took part in the crimson lineups this season will be back to school next year again and win belong to this organization, which will be formed to draw the athletes into closer touch with one another for tho Interest of the University "f Utah first of all things I nit and harmony har-mony will bo the purpose of this organization or-ganization and by getting the men working In close touch with one another an-other more than they have in the past. Any "nthlele, who has won his letter in any activity Will become a member of this organization nexl -e-son and only members on the campus will bo permitted to join. These men will function In many ways for the interest in-terest of athletics and there will be no more dissension in any branch of sports on the east bench. PLANS FOR 1922 Coach Fitzpatrick has already laid his plans for the next season's football foot-ball and will have his early practice on Cumming's field on Sptember 16, which will be at least throe weeks before th" first game an! two weeks before school registration. He is planning plan-ning to have Miss Van Cott conduct la training table for the boys and tho athletes will be put over tho rocks tor the first week, so they will be in the best of condition for th-. opening of the year on October 7 Mack Swan. Warren Gilmer, Mickey Oswald and James Anderson are tne four men who will not don the Crimson moleskins next season, but theie will bo some valuable material to fill In the gaps that these men have left The ah- I ! sence of Mack Swan will be the bif-! bif-! gest hole In the Crimson team, as jSwan has been unanimously chosen a.i : tackle on the Rocky Mountain elev-: 'en for the past three years. He h.isj j graduated from the university after tour years ot faithful service and hixj place will be a hard one to fill. Jle j will be working in th- city and It'a 0 I safe bet to say that Swan will be on i : hand to give the line men a few instructions in-structions when they get out for the early 1 raining next season. Fltzpatrick's new' organization was , 'discussed by a number of the athletes I who will be back at school, and all 1 I of tho lads are solidly back of the' new scheme, whic h will tend to bring I them closer than ever before and will 'make athletics worth while on the hill ! I for the men who are game enough to I pglve the time to them. Tilings are (beginning to move In the right dlrec- j tlon on the ea.-t bench, and with a few new s hemes and some new men to work with the department. Utah 1 shot. Id forge 10 the fron in all ;i,?s of athletic activity Mr. Varley said last evening that I the rumors of new athletic depart- ' menl on the hill were unfounded and that Coach Fitzpatrick would be in his present position for the new season sea-son again with some more help all along the athletic line. This meant that l tab's teams should bfl stronger jthan ever and the Salt Lake fans will be able to see many new ideas In tho (athletic teams of the state school, if the proper man can be secured from one of the Big Ten schools. |
