Show RECALLS A GREAT POLITICAL DISASTER The death of Richard A. Ballingor In Seattle, Wash., recalls the .scandal j in the Taft administration which resulted re-sulted in the split in the Republican party In 101- and the election of Woodrow Wilson. Ballinger was secretary of the inter ior and was reported to be preparing to sell much of the timber and coal land oi Alaska to the Guggenhelma and Others when ;ifford I'inchot made protest Ballinger will go down In the an nals of the country as the man whf conduct as a cabinet officer did more to upset ihe political forces of the nation na-tion than any other official ever in public life. Ballinger was a man of perseverance persever-ance and ambition. He started life as a cowboy and gained much of his edu cation by studying while on the range He saved enough money to attend the I state university of Kansas and at that instnuion uas advised by Senator John I Ingalls to go to Williams col- 1 lego, Massachusetts where he gradu ated in 1881 with young Garfield. Then I he studied law, became city attorney of Decatur Alabama, moved to Washing, Wash-ing, was elected superior Judge in 1892. He was mayor of Seattle in 1904-OG and in 1907 was made commls I sioner of the general land office, being I appointed b) President Roof-evelt. Then he was made secretary of Ihe ' interior and from then on his career I was a stormy one. lie would have escaped es-caped a calamity had he listened to J Gifford Pinchot, but he was persuaded to break away from Pinchot's conser j I vat Ion policy and in doing so involved the whole administration and finally the ountry m a political uproar whil b kept the Republican party out or power pow-er for a period of eight years oo |
