I It is pointed out that the curtailment of operations resulting from the walk out of miners in certain Carbon coun ty districts has limited production in j but a portion of the operating proper ties With the dearth of any market for coal and tho lack of definite information infor-mation concerning the number oi men who went out in response lo the national na-tional strike call on April 1, it hafl been difficult to obtain an accurate estimate es-timate of the employment situation in the Utah coal mines. Formal announcement of the first cut in the price of coal to follow the 30 per cent reduction In wages which went Into effect April 1 was made last night by Moroni Heiner, vice presl dent and general manager ot the Unll ed States Fuel company, operating mines In Carbon and Emen counties. Mr Heiner Btated 'hat circulars will be mailed to the iradc announcing reductions re-ductions in the mine prices, effective May 1 In his announcement Mr. Heiner calls attention to the difficulties t I by Utah mines In the Pacific coast markets they formerly enjoyed. Foreign For-eign coals moving by water are being laid down at San Francisco and other coast ports at prices which Utah mines cannot meet under existing freight rates. Reduction in operat ' Ing costs through the wage cui and probable future reductions in freight rates may reopen tho coast markets in the not far distant future. |
