Show f 5 KILLED; 50 KURT IN GAS TANK EXPLOSION Many Meet Fearful Death From Effect ' Of Blazing Liquid MEMPHIS, Tenn.. Jan. 24. At least twenty-five per sons, most of them negroes, were killed, according lo police estimates, and lifty or more injured by an explosion of a tank car near the filling station of the Colyar-Reese company, set off presumably by a spark from n workman's chisel which tore to splinters a row a frame dwellings at Front and Looney streets here today and shattered windows within a radius of fifteen blocks and shook the entire north end of the city. A row of tenement houses, a block in length, all of frame construction, was levelled by the force of the explosion, killing and maiming the occupants.. Ten bodies, torn almost beyond recognition, were removed re-moved within a few minutes and every ambulance was summoned sum-moned to remove the injured to hospitals. In all, fifty persons per-sons were given treatment. Others, bruised and cut by glass, vere given treatment by phvsicians at the scene. The detonation of the explosion was heard throughout the city and the thousands who flocked to the scene added to the confusion and made difficult the work of the police and i i ' volunteer rescue parties. Virtually no trace of the tank car was left. |
