Show I uu , UTAH'S VOTE IS NOT RECORDED. There was a little good-natured rivalry riv-alry over the selecting of a messenger to carry Utah's electoral vote to Washington, where, not later than (Monday, it was to have been cast In the electoral college in favor of War ren Harding as president of the Unit ed States. Mrs. M. L. Judd was select- I ed to perform the sacred mission and the lady was supposed to have depart cd for Washington ns I tah's bearer of six vote?. But when the time arrived ar-rived for the recordjnc of the voice of the people, Utah was without representation repre-sentation A special telegram from Washington conveys this Information: I Vice President Marshall said, as he closed his office tonight, that ho would grant no mileage to delinquent state messengers. Mrs. Judd. had she arrived today, would have been paid 25 cents a mile from Sr.lt Lake to Washing- I ton and return. If the vice presl- I dent makes good his threat she will draw no mileage whatever. As for the fine, there Is little prospect that that will be Imposed, Im-posed, though the vice president ! stressed tbev point that the gov l' ernment can enforce the nenaltv on delinquent messengers If It so desires. A copy of the certificate of I' tab's vote has been received by the vice president by mail, but this copy cannot be accepted for counting by congress and the orig inal eeriiifcato will doubtless be used There Is no intimation as yet that Utah's electoral vote will be thrown out or challenged be cause not delivered In time and if any move is made to throw out the vote It will be resisted, so that Utah's vote probably will finally appear in the Harding and Cool-idgu Cool-idgu column. Tere Is nothing serious to this failure fail-ure to have Utah's vote properly list- j od, although it proves that the elec-1 toral college has no real function and ' that the services of a messenger bear-j log the votes of any state are perfunc tor? and should be done away with. The paying of mileage lor this purpose is one of the extravagances of govern ment which should be stopped The whole procedure Is a farce. |
