Show SAWBONES IN SESSION the national medical holding its annual meeting by western prow pr to the th herald ner ld WASU washington INGTON may way 7 dr J V r shoemaker of pennsyl pennsylvania vania chairman of the section on practical medicine read a report dinv inv in which he traced the history of the practice of medicine materia medica and physiology with wil extended reference to the bacilli theory he lie referred in severe terms to the tendency manifested on the part of specialists to form cliques and exclude the rest of the profession from their deliberations an attempt was thus made to form an aristocracy in the most democratic of professions these strictures were received with general applause the next address wag was bythe chairman of the section on obstetrics and diseases of women dr T A reamy of ohio and dr henry smith of philadelphia offered a resolution which recited that an attempt was now being made to restrict by legislation the practice of invest investigation igat anin in i medical science by experiments on animal sas such reeta restriction action IB in not needed by medical men and would interfere with medical progress I 1 the resolution provides for the appointment of a standing committee to oppose such legislation by all legitimate means A dr dalton of new now york said this movement originated with an antivivisection society and the thle effect of the proposed legislation would be to atop stop vivisection in coll colleges eiges and schools A professor would would be unable to show his class the process of di digestion estion or the circulation of the blood in a frogs foot this result was certainly not desirable the further objects of this society to prevent needless cruelty would find cooperation from the medical profession the re resolutions 5 0 lations were referred to a corns com cittee I 1 dr atwood of st louis i offered a resolution which set forth the objections to medical colleges advertising BO so generally as 03 tending ta increase the number of scholars and lowering the standard dr benjamin of maryland maryland followed with aa additional se resolution solution urging upon all medical colleges the necessity of elevating the afan dard of education at least so far as s jo 0 o require a preliminary examination a three years course a regis register ter of attendance and practical demonstration of diagnostic skill he ile skid said the medical medic student could new now obtain ai diploma without ever having felt A mans pulse everybody wants to elevate the profession and if WB canno it bv a iet tat ua us called out a delegate and thia this evoked hearty bursts oi of laughter dr henry of new now york rose to speak on the question and was expressing his opinion in rather an emphatic way about the disgrace which medical colleges were bringing bric upon the profession he lie was interrupted b by a motion to lay on tho the table w which chich the president put and beclar declared ed carried dr henry called out that every time this question had been brought forward it was squelched in the most undignified way A delegate called the atter attention tion of the chair to the fact that he had only put the question on the table one one way the chair put the motion again 0 and tho the of viva voce beina doubtful a rising vota vote waa was called for and the association tion refused to table the motion by a very large vote dr henry then resumed ned the floor and expressed the opinion that medical colleges were responsible for the discredit which had bad fallen upon the profession on account of incompetent doctors this remark was greeted with applause and s some 0 i me hisses we re heard 4 there is no use in hissing 11 exclaimed dr henry with considerable warmth 1 I am an old soldier and I 1 know that that men who are hissing have some private axe to grind he ile then continued his remarks urging tho the necessity of elevating the standard of education in the profession dr bobbins robbins chairman of the section oc or the state of medicine said ho he intended to report a resolution in regard to medical colleges before the adjournment of the association the resolution of dr benjamin was then arl adopted opted and the association adjourned jour ned |
