Show EXPRESS IN ENGLAND the increase in their number Nut liber and speed on the different lines since 1871 JO journal of Statts Ucal society comparing the express services of 1871 and 1883 it appears that the increase of express trains during that period has been or throughout the english and scotch line lines the number being per day in 1871 and in 1883 the he average journey has increased from froin 37 3 5 to 41 35 3 5 miles per hour the r running from 40 4 10 to 44 miles mila and the total express 1111 mileage from to a daily iner increase me of miles or 80 per cent the london northwestern stands at the head of the list as re garde ards express mileage with aily daily miles but it is not in the same pa pasi tion as regards running average all the great com banies in deed having increased in this respect by more than the average amount with this 0 one ne excel exception t ion the great northern stands stands first in the running average increase increase being 42 miles per hour in 1871 and afi in 1883 being an increase of 41 4 miles per hour the total express mileage on thia this system has risen from to or 92 per cent the great northern however shows the greatest number of express journeys on each mile though in in the matter of long 1019 runs it of course cannot compete with ith the london northwestern for it is comparatively a short line and has no long runs extending like those from chester to holyhead Holy head or preston to carlisle the manchester an chester sheffield lin coln shire shows the largest increase of all tho the lines in the number of district expresses baying having risen from 11 in 1871 to 49 in 1883 an in crease of 38 As to its average journe journey y speed also that haj hu mounted from 36 miles to 43 an increase increase of 7 per hour and in this matter it is surpassed by only one system viz the glasgow and the southwestern which increased by 7 1112 11 12 miles the running average of the manchester Man chetter fe sheffield has of cou course arse in increased creased from front 38 47 4 7 miles to 44 35 or 6 per cent and its total express mileage from to 2318 or the enormous number of 1724 or per percent clent the tile midland company ranks third in the number of its expresses of which there are are 66 but second as regards express mileage being in 1871 and in 1881 an increase of miles or pe percent r benl its average journey speed is now 5 miles an increase c of 4 1 1 10 per hour since 1871 and its running average is 45 miles wiles an inc increase reaze of 4 1 10 the mid lid land system shows a very large augmentation in the number ot of its daily long runs there having been 20 in 1871 with a mileage of ot 1135 while now there are 84 with a mileage ot of 0 with respect to the total mileage the great eastern has made more rapid progress than any other line having jumped from the bottom bottoni in 1874 when it was mile miles to the fourth place in 1883 with miles an increase increase inci ease per cent of 1788 this is owing largely to the extension of the system in doncaster the number of district expresses has from 3 to 34 its average journey speed from 37 9 10 to 41 and its running average from to 43 As representing the west of england the great western though it still stands fifth in tho the order of total express mileage has actually y reduced its number of district e expresses press cs and therefore of course its total express mileage which now stands at 2600 daily miles Its average journey speed has risen from 38 to 42 miles and its running running average from 41 45 4 5 to for foz the southern lines the changes are nothing like so great the chatham dover has increased c the district expresses from froin 6 to 9 the brighton from 12 to 13 while the southeastern has reduced them from 15 to 12 and the southwestern from 7 to 3 in speed however the latter shows hows best of all the lines south of london having risen from 40 mile miles to 44 the chatham dover following suit from 41 to 43 the southeastern from front 40 to 41 and the brighton from 41 to only 41 this very small increase is is doubtless due to the crowded state of the line between london and croydon which would render a very high speed sliced inadmissible |
