V ber mills a little north of og ogden den 1 river burned to the ground this institution had enjoyed a great and widespread wide spread reputation for the excellence cel lence of the grist it turned out and its hour flour found a market as far east as omaha its destruction did not fail to bo be felt by the farmers who had bad found a ready and profitable market for their wheat at the mills of hon D 11 peery the proprietor however was by no means discouraged by the accident he ile set men to work to clear the debris while casting about for preparatory arrangements for the erection of a new establishment he went into partnership with majas jas mack an experienced miller and expert mechanic who had already built and was running two flouring floering flou ring mills in a cache county at smith field and weston in the early part of 1883 mr mack went east and visited the leading mills in kansas city st louis chicago and other places studying the various processes and finally convincing himself that the gratiot vertical roller system came nearest to that perfection which the ideal mill requires con he contracted for the machinery with the gratiot company and active operations were at once ance begun C rau the shewell well known millwright and draughtsman drew up the plans for a flour ig ing mill of abla daily capacity on n may 1st ast the rock and brick work was begun the for former r b by james hill the latter by joseph T johnson John sou and on july the phoenix mills building had arisen indeed as a phoenix of the future out 0 ut of the ashes of the past sufficiently clent ly to allow the to be commenced the machinery was put in by mr at F cooper a mechanic of no mean ability the starting of the mill being superintended super intended by the gratiot Com compaan Compa ays milling expert ert mr air 11 E lalley a ge gentleman n efem a n of great engineering skill and extended experience he lie having started 14 of the 33 mills put up by the gratiot company Com the past year in various parts of the country east and west on nov 1883 the water was wax turned on and the huga hugo machinery set in simultaneous motion and ever since then the phoenix mills have been running as we hope they will for long long years turning out an excellent article of biscuit and bread material second to none produced between the two seaboards sea boards after repeated visits to this grand establishment we will venture to give our readers a faint idea of its arrangements although our apace space permits of hardly more than a mere enumeration of the parts of a mechanism the full description of which would crowd a volume first as to the building it ceass ures by feet the first three stories the lower two of rock the third of brick as is the fourth are 12 feet in height each the fourth reaches 14 ft ft and the filth fifth a mansard is 15 it ft high the roof from which one enjoys an oil unexcelled view all over the country dotted with its prosperous settlements and farms is covered with black corrugated iron to the east of the building are two large ponds which afford affard on the side ae of pleasure a splendid sporting g ground for skaters in winter and for oarsmen oarsman in summer while from a business busine aa standpoint they lur burnish niall unlimited quantities dofice of ice in winter all and d untold numbers of offish fish in summer all these combine to make tho the phoenix mills a place of pleasant resort but their chief interest is is in the machinery which converts the wheat of the producer into the flour odthe of the consumer stepping down into the bement basement or first floor we first 6 rat notice the mo me live tive power the mainspring which puts Us life and usefulness into the dead dull combination of iron and steel it is a 44 special lefiell turbine water wheel set in motion by the never uever relaxing current the creek issuing from the big pond there is seventeen and one halt half feet head of water home bonse powers power a from the turbine goes an eighteen inch fou four fourtly reply ply rubber belt which puts in motion main shaft the spindle spindles the t he for stones etc em once the on and the turbine round and round the whole machinery with all its complication complications and intricacies works automatic and works as a smoothly as a charm in this connection we also wish to draw attention to the admirable with which the entire gearing ring works with over a hundred beal red tons of iron iron and etcel steel machinery swinging all the time no not t the least jar or vibration is notice able throughout the building this excellent state of affairs is 13 entirely due to the minute precision with which mr af M F cooper has put in the organism of the mill the mill has not had to be stopped for a minute on account of the wright ilig so 60 exact and correct were bom both the calculations of the plan and the execution by mr air cooper in this baschn basement t we also see the foong of 29 stands 0 of f eleva tora tori the with the co conveyor n which by way form an tin almost inextricable network throughout the building but through which the wheat bran and flour ruc runs as well regulated ns us the blood flaws flows through the system of veins and arterie arteries down here we have also the wheat receiving bin with capacity of bushels and a barnard A lea bran packer from here also start the water works which run up the whole structure with hose hoge attachment tach ment on each floor the pump being worked in connection with the milling willing machinery the second floor includes the main entrance from the south on which fide side is also the spout for the reception of the wheat which is run into a receiver holding and rind weighing on a fairbanks scale 60 b bu at the be dropped into the storage bin of bu capacity from this it is conveyed to another B A L separator from that to a morgan scourer and to a backer becker buh bush machine where it receive receives the finishing touches preparatory to its probations by reduction on thia this second floor are fire also established four oration vertical roller rollers where the berries aro are first longitudinally split into halvee halves to enable the subsequent bub sequent removing of the germ which though nutritious is an undesirable ingredient of flour for various reasons and undergo further reductions being cleansed of the fuzz and other impurities still adhering to the wheat on a double set of smooth rollers the germs and course are reduced A double set of mixed rollers attends to the reduction of purifier the fourth floor presents its to the eye a great combination of machinery there are 2 four reel golding chests 16 ft long loep 2 sets of childs improved mp roved centrifugal reels 4 scalp ing reels 3 no 0 smiths purifiers with dust collectors on top by which latter all danger of spontaneous s onta combustion of flour dust fust is removed further we come across a U S bran duster and the becker brush and barnard lea separator no 2 already referred to above on the fifth floor are placed 2 scalp chest chests 1 grading and I 1 dusting red reel for 2 scalping ecal ping reels and 3 no 0 smith purifiers erg also with dust collectors attached wo we here ace barda bards dustless dust lesa receive receiving wheat separator the first machinery through which the golden kernel goes after coming out of the farmer farmers liand hand through the tile weighing bin and elevators after it has passed through this initial cleanser and had bas been below in another separator it returns to the fifth floor to receive the beneficial attentions of a morgan scourer after which it travels on its career thousands and thousands of feet every station reduction reel working separately and
