anniversary the entrance of the pioneers into salt lake valley waa was celebrated in this city under the auspices auspice 3 of the ogden brass band the weather though hot was j nevertheless beautiful A light j shower of rain aurill during the night pre pro j vidua rendered it a little cooler than j it otherwise would have been As the gray dawn of morning was visible over the eastern mountains many of the citizens were astir preparing for the days enjoyment cateron later on a grand artillery tillery ir salute fully aroused the citizens and shortly after the stars and stripes were hoisted and never floated more proudly on the morning breeze than they did on that memorable occasion by seven the brass band in their splendid plen did uniform were out serenade ser enad ing the town and inspiring every one with their cheering strains shortly before nine the band repaired to the depot to meet the baseball club and other guests from salt lake city whom they escorted to the junction city hotel where they furnished their gues guests t with comfortable quarters by ten a large concourse of citizens had assembled a sem bled at the pavilion on lester park square to participate in the days festivities tho people were called to order by james taylor esq marshal of the d day 1 the band played hail colu columbia ml which was followed by prayer by mr joseph hall chaplain this was succeeded suc ceded by a fine selection by the band prof L F monch then delivered a lengthy very eloquent ORATION in which he lie reviewed the excited condition of the religious world prior bior to the first visitation of f the tile heavenly y messenger to joseph smith the speaker then spoke of the organization of the church of jes jesus us christ of latter day saints he the persecution which followed them from that timela time in new york ohio 1 missouri illinois and other places the orator dwelt at considerable length and depicted in a vivid manner the cruelties cruel ties inflicted on the latter day saints which they endured unflinchingly for the gospels sake that many of them had sealed scaled their faith and testimony with their blood and and died martyrs to the principles they held dearer than life prof monch then recapitulated many of the historical events which characterized the expulsion of thia this people from nauvoo their travels across the plains their entrance into int 0 and settlement odthe of the valleys of utah and the blessings b esin g bof of divine providence which ba have ve crowned their efforts in redeeming the land from its farmer former sterility and bringing it to its present fruitful condition the band then played tho the british national hymn god save savo the queen mr joseph hall then delivered a short speech on the day we celebrate the speaker referred to he the barren condition in which they bund found the land when the pioneers first entered salt lake valley thirty five years years ago today to day the great reat difficulties they experienced in bailin raising 9 sufficient grain and vegetables to sustain them from one onelar har vest until another during the first few cw years of their residence in utah he spoke of the destructions of heir their crops by crickets and grass hoppers coppers loppers lop pers the raids made upon the early settlers by the indians resulting frequently in the destruction of property and the loss of life the speaker then traced the gradual maual improvements which have ken been made in cultivating the sou so resulting in heavier yields and greater varieties of cereals fruits etc and culminating t in the rich abundance of the comforts coin forts and many ny luxuries of life and the substantial pleasant homes the people of utah enjoy today to day the speaker said aid the TWENTY believed it will be duly appreciated and celebrated by this people and their posterity in in all timo time to come conic that their chil children drell will be reminded of what their fathers have endured to establish them in these places of refuge in the valleys of these mountains mr hall then proposed three cheers for the constitution of the united states and the perpetuity of tile flag of our union which was heartily and vigorously responded to by the vast assembly dr J X alien allen gave a a ten minutes kicking speech the doctor said people in the world generi ally kick against any principles advanced in which they do not believe or any operations they do i not like this he eaid said they had b a d a ri right b to do the people usually kick k i c k against innovations on old established systems of mechanism arts science literature or religion they believe itis it is their right to kick at these innovations especially as in many m any instances they militate against te pecuniary interests of the kickers he said the hand band operatives kicked very hard bard against the introduction of machinery into manufacturing establishments in I 1 former years because they benediction from the chaplain in the afternoon the long expected match of BASEBALL was played on the square between the salt elt lake and ogden baseball clubs which resulted in the ogden club carrying off the laurels laurel it is is considered the finest the be stand closest contested game of baseball ever played in this territory the pitching and catching of both clubs were conceded to be equal to those of any of the leading teams in this country the game was witnessed by a large multitude of people both from the town and from the country who appeared to evince deep interest in the the result of tho the game which when announced was received with great applause all over the grounds good and reciprocal kindness characterizing the contest from the beginning until the tile following are the pavilion by the ogden brass band the building was crowded with youth and beauty to trip tho the light fantastic and participate in all the festivities of the occasion occasion tho the entertainment was a success S pyrotechnic displays were witnessed in various various parts parts of the cit city until a late hour of f the night nothing occurred to materially mat crill mar tho the pleasures of
