L'tah Is one of the fourteen states where Arbor day has been set aside as a lcgal holiday by, an act of the state- legislature. The day is always observed In Utah April 15, While In practically all other states the date Ik., net by a proca'amatlon of the governor gov-ernor each year. Arbor day was originated at a meeting of the state board of agriculture agricul-ture of Nebraska, January 4, 187J through the introduction of a resolution resolu-tion by J. Sterling Morton, of Nebraska. Nebras-ka. City, to tho effect: "That Wcdnes day, the tenth clay of April,. 1872. be cs'pocially set apart and consecrated for tree planting in the state of Nc-braska." Nc-braska." The resolution was adopted and prizes were offered to tho county agricultural society and to tho Individ-, tial who should plant tho greatest number of trees. Wide publicity was) given to the plan, and more than on6 million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor day. Arbor day has been celebrated in - Nebraska and scores of other states vith enthusiasm from the adoption of the day lo the present lime. Th" movement has grown year by year until approximately fifty million trees are now planted yearly through tho observance of the day. In many stages the school children take advantage of, the day to plant trees, flowers and' gardens in the school yards. Members of the Service Star Legion Le-gion Intend to plant a memorial tree in Lestor park this afternoon, if weather conditions permit. Mayor Frank Francis will be present to represent rep-resent the city. Mrs. J. U. Eldredgc, Jr., announced that nothing hort of a downpour will disrupt the plans. oo |
