Should Johnson develop greater strength than he now shows there will be a break In the Utah delegation dele-gation If for no other reason than that Johnson is a western man. He would find ready support in Utah should the present sltiuitlon change materially. .Mrs. Jeanettc Hyde, one of three assistant secretaries of the convention and C. P. Republican national party leaders evinced a keen Interest in the work in Utah, which is one of tho original ori-ginal suffrage states, and much of the work done In Utah will be sued as a pattern for other states, according to Mary Garret Hay, chairman of the women's division of the Republican national committee. Efforts on the part of campaigners from various political camps, newspaper newspa-per reporters and the like to wring alignment promise. from any of tho! Utah delegates have been to no avail. Every delegate Is close-mouthed and' in reply to the hundreds of questions I says Invariably, "We'll see how the I wind Is blowing. We're not instructed you know, boy." "I'll bet you guys nover take any wooden nickels," Is the way one reporter re-porter sized up tho situation, after making tho rounds in Utah headquarters. headquar-ters. And the reporter "doped" just right. Senator Smoot made a short talk to the delegates today and explained to them tho tactical advantage Utah holds becauso of the rule that state delegations shall vote In alphabetical order. This fact will enable tho Utah delegation tocast its vote on the winning win-ning side when the crucial test comes. Jt Is probable that a complimentary vote will bo given either Senator Harding Hard-ing or Governor Coolidgc on the first two ballots by the Utah delegation. ISxcilcs Comment The expulsion of two Missouri dele-gales dele-gales who confessed taking $2500 each of Lowden money was tho topic of much conversation around headquarters, head-quarters, and has served more than any- other one thing to quiet any inclination in-clination on the part of Utah delegates elected as they were on an unlnstruct-cd unlnstruct-cd platform, to keep close-mouthed as to the Individual preferences.
