Representatives of cement companies com-panies who wore also present said they will do all within their power In the future to supph cement to the Offden I project. CAN i sr. S M The officials de ided thai the quality quali-ty of sand and gravel which has been j distributed along the street to form i base for the cement can bo used. After that the sand and grave sryill lonform to the Ogden city specif lea-1 tlons, which are that not more than 5 uer cent of sill will ba permitted In I the averegate. The requirement which the Tort-iland Tort-iland Cement association and the state alike have been striving to enforce for an al-concrete road Is that there shall not be more than 3 per cent of silt. It Is stated that work In progress by F. F Phelps north of Offden, was found to be using a material with higher percentage of silt, and that strict measures were taken to compel observance of the 3 per cent limit. The sand for that work Is now being washed, wash-ed, at a cost of about 2 5 cents a cubic yard. Similarly, It Is stated that at I one time Ryberg Brothers in Salt Lake county were found to be using an aggregate ag-gregate that ran as high as 1 4 8 per I cent silt, but that this was stopped as soon as discovered, and a J per cent content was shown In the next lest Wattis & Samuels ;lso had trouble with Sand and gravel for a time, but corrected cor-rected It on being advised what tlv; analysis showed. TESTS M DI These are all pieces of road construction, con-struction, however. In which the wearing wear-ing surface as well as the base of th road, Is cement concrete. In tho North Washington avenue Job the cement, a "poorer" mixture. Is used for base alone. It Is declared, further, that there is a heavy coating of rock underneath un-derneath hauled to the road through several decades of road work under old conditions. Inasmuch as crushed rock, without any cement at all hus been found to be a good base at times lor a bltullthlc surfacing, It was thought that & per cent of silt might be permissible In the base on North Washington avenue without Injuring the quality of the road. The tests made by City Engineer Tracy are said lo show 5 per cent of silt, but those mads by the state ran as high as 7.6 per cent, and It Is said that tests for tho Portland Cement association associa-tion ran up to 8 per cent for gravel already on hand for the work. The cement companies made complaint com-plaint and threatened to stop shipment of cement for such a road. This brought a ftorm of protests and before tho conference of vestcrdav had been held there were three carloads of cement ce-ment waiting to be unloaded. oo |
