Show I PUNISHMENT FOR HUSBANDS Every once in a while the newspapers newspa-pers contain one news story whicli stands in the limelight, so to speak, 05 reason of the great interest that the readers take in jhe article. The latest of. these unusual news stories was that telling of the action of a judge in Warren, War-ren, Ohio, who ordered that a husband hus-band be given a lashing with the same belt nnd buckle which the husband used in beating his wife. The fact that the husband was given the same kind of medicine he gave his 1 im 1 I wife was interesting and the fact thai j it was the wife who caused the arrest ' of the husband is another Interesting ! feature of the story. Local peace officers of-ficers will bear witness that few wife heaters are arrested upon complaint of the wife. Usually it is the neighbors j and not the wives who bring such j husbands to the police court. It is doubtful If anybody feels sorry ' for the husband in this case. Nobody j loves a wife beater and nobody has j much use for a man who deserts his j family. ' This question of what to do ' with the husband who deserts has been a problem in many communities. Colonel Mary Stillwell of the Salvation Salva-tion Army, who is recognized as the mother of the Salvation Army's rescue and maternity homes, advocates tho whipping post as a remedial measure to prevent men from deserting their families. Colonel Stillwell has found that much of the suffering of women and children comes from the selfish abandonment aban-donment by the husbands and fathers. She feels that nothing can be made I too hard for the man who disregards) his obligation to his wife and his chil-' dren, and especially his children ! In Utah desertion of a family is an indictable misdemeanor. Quite often j fathers Avho have fled to other stales J have been returned "by the forces of the law and placed under bond to sup-1 port the family from which he fled. Jail is the penalty for failing to live up to the promise made the court to support those dependent upon him. As 1 a general thing this system has worked j in about as satisfactory a manner as , is possible, bu there are times when the circumstances are such that many would like, to see the whipping post set up for certain of these deserting fathers. |
