Show RED CROSS GIVES MILLION HEALS TO RUMANIANS BUCHAREST. June 5. (Correspondence (Correspon-dence of the Associated Presfc) One million meals were issued to Rumania's poor by the American Red Cross dur nz the month of April. This doubtless doubt-less saved hundreds of destitute person per-son who might otherwise have succumbed suc-cumbed to starvation. The Department Depart-ment of Civilian Relief of the Rumanian Ruman-ian Mission of the American Red Cross which is under the direction of Major Qeorge Twose, of Chiraco, and Miss Plorence M. Patterson of Burlington, Wisi now has relief stations and canteens at Constanza, Calatz, Braila, Focsani, Jaaay, Buzou, iifov. Budesti, Patloge, Pftestl, Campalone, Rani Ser-at Ser-at and Bucharest. A i Pocaanl, alone, more than 60,000 meals are given out weekly to the destitute des-titute population. All these cities are centers for a large number of villages. From one of these centers the Americans Ameri-cans often may serve with relief supplies sup-plies from 100 to 300 villages. In addition ad-dition to feeding those who are not able to provide for themselves, the big American relief organization is supplying sup-plying the local hospital?, and charitable chari-table institutions with medicines, clothing and whatever miscellaneous material it has. With the arrival at Galatz this week of thousands Of additional tons of food, Colonel H. Gideon Wells, of Chicago, Chief of the Rumanian Mission, plans to extend the activities of his organisation organi-sation so that every deserving Rumanian Ruman-ian shall receive help. The United States naval transport Lake Elizabeth, the big relief ship chartered specially by lh American Red Cross to bring supplies to Rumania, Ru-mania, has arrived with gTeat quantities quanti-ties of food, oil, soap, hospital supplies, sup-plies, clothing, sheets, thread, needles and sewing machines. The American Red Cross is endeavoring endeav-oring to meet t)i.. great need among the poor for clothing. It already has given out such a great number of garments gar-ments that its stocks have been greatly great-ly depleted. But Colonel Henry W. Anderson, Chief Commissioner of the American Red Cro.s for the Balkan Btatee who came to Rumania on the Lake Elisabeth said he expected soon to receive several thousand additional tons of clothing from America. |
