Show GOMPERS ADVISES I WORKERS NOT TO I OVPRREACH AIMS I BALTIMORE. Oct 23 Samul Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, was given a tremendous tre-mendous ovation when he appeared tonight to-night before the United Textile Uork-ers Uork-ers in convention here. Mr. Gompers urged the textile workers to pursue their alms calmly and avoid overreaching over-reaching themselves. Referring to th-employers th-employers group at the Washington conference, while condemning their course, he laid most of the blame not. on the actual employers in the group, ! but upon their lawyers. ' I am reliably informed," he said, "that it was the lawyers in the em-i em-i ployers" group who cast the majoritv of the votes in that group to cast the Uote of the group in conference against the declarations of labor." He argued that it was useless tor I the labor group to continue in the con I ference after labor's declarations had been rejected. W hile the vote of the labor group could have prevented the views of the employer group being adopted, it could have done no more, he said, and it would have been useless use-less to stay in the conference merely to cast negative votes. Mr. Gompers spoke appreciatively of the letter sent the conference by President Wilson, asking that It stay in session until it had composed Its views and formulated a policy. "The president's letter," he said, soberly, "written from his chamber, where he was flat on his back, was a wonderful document. It will live ril one of his greatest labors not only because of what it contained, but because be-cause of the circumstances under which It was written. Of course, we could not be adamant against such an appeal We retired to confer, made concessions and camo before the conference con-ference almost confident the president's presi-dent's desire could be approved." |
