Show Bandits Reach Mountain Fastnesses and Probably Prob-ably Have Escaped. MORE PLANES PURSUE Mexican Cavalry Continues Con-tinues Search For Missing Aviators. MARFA, Texas, Aug. 23 Pursuit of Mexican bandits by the American pu-nitive pu-nitive expedition is eontimiiog- eowffc from the point in Mexico where anj American camp has been established, it was announced today. The trails are not considered "hot" however and, as th bandits have reached the mountain moun-tain fastnesses, it Is feared they have escaped The return of Major-General Joseph T. Dickman to San Antonio last night is considered here an indication that the situation below the border is not serious although the fear of a clash between Mexicans in the mountains i and American troops was causing some worry today. Airplanes left Royce flying field hre at daylight today to join the punitive pu-nitive expedition. No bombs were taken on the first scout pianos to leave the field here. It was announced at the aviation field that there is no intention of abandoning the Presidio landing field for airplanes flying to Mexico, which will be used as a sub-basd for the aerial aer-ial service. Planes will begin landing in Mexico today. Field landings today are good except for the presence of; Mesquite bushes and high weeds which tear the propellors badly. Several propellors were shipped to Kelly field, Texas, after having parts of the blades worn olf by contact with weeds. An airplane driven by Aviator Johnson John-son landed in the mud yesterday, both aviators and plane escaping uninjured Motor trucks have been assembled here to carry gasolene In drums and supplies of oil to the new landing field in Mexico. Engineers inspected the fords on the Rio Grande yesterday and found them good, except for soft spots on the Mexican side, wbere rock work must be done to make the surface hard enough for trucks and pack trains to continue supplying the expedition. Mexican Cavalrymen in Chase CALEXICO, Cal., Aug. 23 Two hundred hun-dred Mexican cavalrymen working un d r the direction of Colonel Hipolito Baranea, are eontlnuing today a search in the northern portion of Lower California Cali-fornia for Lieutenants C. H. Connelly and Clark B. Waterhouso, American army aviators who have been missing since Tuesday. The cavalrymen are reporting to Colonel Baranea by messenger and their reports are being relayed to Mayor May-or J. W, Abbott here who was instrumental instru-mental In securing their aid in the search. They are scouring the country coun-try from the . international line to a parallel line about twenty-seven miles south and after that section is thoroughly thor-oughly searched it is planned to send them into the district immediately south if necessary'. American aviators sent from Rockwell Rock-well field to aid in the search are not working from Calexlco at present because be-cause the landing field here Is temporarily tempor-arily unlit, shortage of water having prevented the completion of certain work on it A detachment of United States cavalry is reported to be at work further west. |
