Show Bob Martin Wins Big Feature Race In a Snow Storm "Bob" Martin, representing the Salt Lake Elks, won the cross-count r championship race from North Ogden j to Ogden yesterday in fast time in a blinding snow storm, defeating Ted j Johnson, former western champion, by 200 yards. Martin, who is wo&teni champion, rad a heady race and displayed dis-played his old time class A sleot storm greeted the runners as they departed over the course and the muddy "ondi tions hampered their movements. Old Man Weather appeared III the early morning with rain to greet the Armistice Joy makers. The runners, I after leaving their mark, ran for four miles in rain and, despite that fact., made fast time. The course, owing to the weather, was cut ehort of bU miles j and the runners covered 5 and 2-5 1 miles in 30 minutes and 42 seconds.! This mnrk for the distance is a west ) rn record and will go down in the A. A. U- books as a state record. Ted Johnson, running unattached, was the second man to cross the tape. Johnson is a veteran and was a close necond. finishing about two hundred1 j arils behind Martin Cail Martin, lunning unattached.' was the third man to cross the tape Cail is a brother of the champion and ! also displayed class. Clarence Preshaw, running under the colors of the American Legion of Ogden, finished fourth. Preshaw was in the race for three miles but cramps accompanied the star and he was. forced to the rear. He, however, ran; a heady race and finished strong. Five other entrants who entered the big race failed to finish. Following the big six-mite event the 100-yard dash men in the afternoon showed their prowess. Creed Hay-' mond. American champion in the eo)-1 lege class, won both the century and, furlone in fast time Haymond won; the 100 yard dash in 10 3-5 seconds on; a muddy fi' ld and covered the 22n-ard event in 23 flat. He Is one of the' world's greatest runners and has a record to hack his feats. In the dashes Hutton of Ogden high and O'Keefe of Ogden high were second sec-ond and third in both events In the 220-yard event Hut ton showed a world of class and gave Hayniond a battb' for the first half of the distance. Haj mond finished strong. Robert Martin won the mile event with east from Tri Johnson, wh) finished fin-ished second. Martin took the lead In the final lap and finished with a strong sprint. His time was 5.17. Oscar Os-car Martin, running his first race, was a close third Six mn started In this event but only three finished. At the banquet at the Weber club last night Creed Hayniond and Rob ert Martin, both champions, congratulated congratu-lated the athletic committee for their work in making the event such a success suc-cess Raymond said in part: "I have competed in races throughout through-out America but I have never seen such wonderful prizes as have been donated bv the Merchants of Ogden for such an occasion It certainly is a credit to the men. and having competed com-peted in all parts of America, having received wonderful prizes for my efforts, ef-forts, I can truthfully say that the prizes offered today are superior to any that 1 have ever seen in this country.'' |
