Show TIBER'S OFFICE SWAMPED m Taxpayers rushed to the court house this morning in such numbers that the force of clerks could not care for all who stood in line by 32 o'clock noon, which was the hour set for the beginning begin-ning of delinquency and, according to a strict interpretation of the law. those who were not given receipts before that time should be classed as delinquents. delin-quents. Inasmuch as many had stood in line from a comparatively early hour in the morning, however, the time was extended to include them all. Files of taxpayers reached from the treasurer's window clear to the doors of the court house. Many women with babies had to drop out of their places to rest themselves in nearby chairs. There is a three or four days' accumulation accu-mulation of mail in the treasurer's office which the force has not had time to open because of the rush of business. Treasurer Huish stated that thoso who. paid their taxes by mail will be given receipts as soon as the office can get through tho work confronting con-fronting it now and take time to open the mail. |
