Show GRADUATED v J1 What we were to do to help was1 the ? thing which bothered all of us some ; eighteen months ago when we entered ; the great war. "Tell us what to do," .' was the general cry. The United States Food Adminis-tration Adminis-tration was among the first of government, gov-ernment, organizations to set to the task of answering that call, for it had many things for everybody to do. It is not easy to get a message ! across to the millions throughout the length and breadth of a country as great as America. But the Food Ad-: Ad-: ministration in one year has found that it can get returns from its people in a very short time. Practically every -,' body has co-operated and therein is the secret of national success. There have been "special drives" at .' special times certain periods when above all things it was necessary to send wheat or sugar or meat or to go without other things at home. Ev-l Ev-l ery one knows the splendid co-opera -y tion of communities, and individuals i v?ho volunteered to go wholly without 1- wheat as long as the shortage should last. It has been largely the same in regard to meat. Recently given two pounds of sugar as a monthly house-hold house-hold ration, many people have not purchased even that much. , Now there comes somewhat of a jj change. The crop of 1918 looks safe. K But since wb are not likely to have ; as big a harvest next year, because lv so many of our men are going "over ij there," wo must keep on saving to : provide for the future. Each must do j. his" part In sending across the Atlan-3 Atlan-3 tic fifty per cent more food than we f sent last year. If stringent saving last year was our greatest proof that we were really in the war, we have still more vital pro.of 1 now, with our big army In France. L We aro not likely to forget that there must bo continuous rigid conservation J for tho boys' sake, j The time has come when the Food 'T Administration must say to you, "Use J'our own judgment. The responsibili-ty responsibili-ty is yours directly. Bo careful ev-; ev-; erywhere. You know there won't be i greatdcal of sugar for anybody for ; t eoiiie time to conie. You know that , you should still continue to eat corn-. corn-. bread, to save wheat and that all bak- ing -would better be done with mixed flours. You know that wo must ship 15,000,000 tons of food this year 5,-000,000 5,-000,000 more than we shipped . last year, half as much again, which means that the consumption of all foods must be cut, as far as consideration of health will permit. You will not fail. Of that the Food Administration is certain. cer-tain. You have finished your elementary elemen-tary course at the school of Food conservation. con-servation. You have entered the graduate grad-uate school." oo |
