Show HUNDREDS OF OIIARTS OF FRUIT TO BE SENT TO FORT DOUGLAS FOR USE OF WOUNDED SOLDIERS A beautiful display of preserved fruit was exhibited by the members of the Womon's Christian Temperance Union at tho basement of the Presbyterian Presby-terian church this morning. The fruit is to be given to the commissary com-missary department at the base hospital hos-pital at Forj. Douglas, and is to be used exclusively for wounded soldiers brought from the front. The display contained 1680 quarts of fruit and 168 glasses of jelly, as well as about 241 quarts of tomatoes. The entire display is the result of either labor and material donated by Vho' people of Ogden and Weber county. coun-ty. The fruit was given by the Fruit Growers' association and by the individual indi-vidual farmers of the county. Judge A. W. Agee and C. Creigh-baum Creigh-baum were the heaviest donors of the fruit, though nearly every orchardist in the county has tried to do his share ra the patriotic work. . Mrs. A. M. Flewelling, president of the W. C. T. U., and Mrs. J. F. Law-son, Law-son, chairman of the fruit preservation work, state that the work Is by no means the result of the W. C. T. U. alone, but that nearly every denomination denomina-tion of the city has assisted iii the work. The officials especially thank the Boy Scouts of Ogden who havo worked in picking and transporting fruit from the source to the Presbyterian Presbyter-ian church, since the preservation began be-gan two weeks ago. The boy scouts have also, gathered the bottles from tho residents of the city where they were given to the cause by the patriotic pa-triotic citizens. Scout Master Wilson has assisted in security the unity of the boy scout work. The W. C. T. U. officials wish to thank the members and officers of the Presbyterian church for donating the use of the basement of the building for the work. The entire resources of the church have been given to the cause. The fruit preserved is of great variety, va-riety, principally peaches. Other fruits are cherries, pears, and plums. The president of the organization states that the fruit will be sent immediately im-mediately by automobile to Fort Douglas. Doug-las. Since the work began, the basement of the church has been guarded by the boy scouts at night to insure safety of the supply. Four medals will bo given to the best workers of the scouts. The Ogden women are said to be the first to organize the work systematically, system-atically, in other cities the work being be-ing done by individuals. |
