Show IYOUDO YOUR As a part of the work of arousing the people to an appreciation of. the position of tho United States in tho war, the agricultural colleges have sent talented men and women to bear messages direct to the homes. Daily the appeals are being made but at times the labor must be discouraging for Tho Standard has received an open letter from Edna M. Ladwig, Weber county home demonstrator, who is from the Colorado agricultural college, col-lege, In which this failure to get desired de-sired results is clearly disclosed, as follows: "Editor Standard: All the blood, all tho heroism, all the money and all tho munitions in tho world will not win this war, unless our allies and the people peo-ple behind them are fed. "Wo are jUBt entering into tho war; just crossing the threshold aj it wero. RuBsia is put out of the war, Italy may be put out and this war may be drivon home to our very doora. America Amer-ica does not appreciate tho seriousness serious-ness of the situation. Germany is known to be better off for food than a year ago. "The inconsistency of the American people is appalling. Many do a lot of talking but no actual work on the war. Jn order to win, this must be an individual matter, and yet the number num-ber of homes which have not oven started whcatlcss and meatless days, lot alone saving sugar by merely doing do-ing away with candy, are too numerous numer-ous to mention. They are too selfish to help the nation rather spend tho time in watching to see if a neighbor is doing his bit than to start in and conscientiously do thoir part and thereby set an example. "It Is not enough for you to do your 'bit," but you must help others to do theirs. France has telegraphed that sho has practically no wheat for present pres-ent use, and yet less than 1 per cent of whole wheat flour is being used in Ogdcn. That husband who refuses to try to eat the cornbread that his wife makes, unless it makes him ill is positively posi-tively pro-German. How can you say you will try to do your bit, or are doing do-ing it, when you have a cake on the tablo with a frosting let alone having a cake? "Any person who will make light of any organization for taking up the government gov-ernment suggestions for the study and practice of food substitution has pro-German pro-German attitudes. These bazaars and festivities of churches that allow candy can-dy booths or servo frosted cakes or dinners with meat and pork and beans, both in the menu, when we are asked to save moat, are too thoughtless thought-less for a position as leaders in a community. com-munity. An organization, whether religious, re-ligious, social or civil, cannot affard to say it has no time for the work of a government from which it expects protection, and one in which it claims a part. If you cherish your organization, organiza-tion, bo broad enough to see that in protecting it you need to help the organization or-ganization whloh made it possible to exist. By doing a work in co-operation for a common cause, you do not need to lose your Identity In said organization organiza-tion but rather to strengthen it. "Tho war will be a slow process and the end will be gained by a wearing-out wearing-out rather than by a decisive victory. It will take eight allies to every ten Germans killed. From -this it will be seen that it will be a matter of supplying supply-ing food enough. Your government does not want, you to give up three square meals a day or- even one. All it asks is that you eat Jess of the foods, namely, wheat, .meat, fat and sugar that are so greatly needed, by our armies, our allied armies and the people behind them, and moro.of tho foods that are plentiful." nn |
